EXTREME SPEED.

(Turf, Field, and Farm.) The season of 1889 is closed on all the traoks, and Maud S. still stands at the head of extreme performers in harness. In the early summer there were great hopes of Jay-eye-see going faster than he had ever gone, but the weak leg gave way in training and he ceased to be a dangerous factor in the fight for the crown. Guy then loomed up as the sensational trotter, and steadily reduced his record until 2min lOf 3eo was reached. The belief took root that his easy, gliding motion would some day carry him below 2min Sfseo, but he struck his knee when hope was brightest, and he will go into winter quarters with rank even lower than that of J&y-eye-see. The only mature mare that succeeded in beating 2min 14aeo was Belle Hamlin, who dropped down to 2min 12|seo. The handsome daughter of Hamlin's Almont, Jr., is still capable of a higher rate of speed, and we shall look for her to go a little faster next season. As it is, she is the third fastest mare ever bred. Sunol, the great three-year old, trained from 2min 18seo down to 2min lOisec, and she ranks next to Maud S., the star of Mr Bonner's stable. Axtell, although but three years old, beadd the stallion list with his wonderful record of 2min 12sec, but sharply after him are Palo Alto and Stamboul, each with a record of 2min 12^860. Then comes Maxey Cobb, with his record of 2min 13|sec, and Bonnie M'Gregor, with a mark of 2min 13$8eo. Phallas is sixth in rank with bis 2min 13f sec, obtained in a race of heats, and Hickory Grove farm is hopefu! that he will ultimately improve hiß position, as

he is now in training in California. The present grouping of performers with records faster than 2min 14sec is as follows : — MARES. Maud S., eh m (1874), by Harold (eon of Kysdyk's Hambletonian), dam Mius Rubsell, by Pilot, junr; 2nd dam Sally HubsoH, thoroughbred daughter of Boston. Bred at Woodburu farm, Kentuoky, by A. J. The lesson to be drawn from the statistics is that the surest way to get a recork breaker is to take the blood oi the great progenitor buried at Chester and put behind it plenty of the blood that has been tested in the higher speed flights of the racetracks of the country. He who looks for extreme speed must braed up, not down.
