CHATTON.
April 30. — Harvest operations are almost completed. The aeason undoubtedly libb been the finest for many years ; it was, however, if anything, rather too dry. Everyone is oomplaining of a shortness of water ; tanks are empty, and streams that usually are well supplied are at present dry. The yield of grata has been very fair. A few paddocks of the very earliest wore, however, found to be somewhat light compared with those a little later. A fine brightsample ie the ordinary run in colour, whereas a clear one was for several years the exception. Fires. —There have been several fires in different parts of the district this year, and I am sorry to say that I think some of them have not been aooidental. Only the other day Mr George Aitkea, of Wendon, had four big stacks of oats burnt under very subpioious circumstances. It will be a very heavy loss to Mr Aitken, as I hear the stacks were uninsured.
Licensing.— l hear there is a possibility of the Ohatton folk again having a licensed house in their midst. A good many people" are of opinion that now that the house 1b closed it would be a wise thing to leave it so. The probability Is that if the present committee allow it to be reopened their action will be nullified by next year's committee.— [Arrived, too late for last issue.— Ed ]
