CENTRAL TAIERI RACES.
President: Mr H Lawson Johnson. Vice-presi-dent: Mr J A Duff. Judge: Mr W Snow. Starter: Mr J Grindley. Stewards : Messrs T Qeorge, J Nlohol, N Reid, W Orossan, G Butherford, A Robertson, and W G Christie. Treasurer : Mr SB Brent. Handlcapper: Mr G Dowse. Timekeeper: Mr G Butherford. Clerk of Course : Mr N Reid. Cleric of Scales : Mr W G Christie. Secretary : Mr T A White. The Central Taieri Jockey Club inaugurated their oareer on Saturday with a race meeting held on Mr J. B. Blair's land, at Shand's (near Oatram). The course which was used is the one that the Taieri Amateur Turf Olub held a meeting on four or five years ago. It is within a couple of miles of Outram, and the paddock iv which it is situate comprises an area of 75 acres, which is now under offer to the club. The weather was most favourable for the opening meeting, and consequently a large number of people, residents in the district as well as city people, put in an appearance, but the visitors from town would no doubt have been doubled ia point of numbers had there been excursion fares to the course. As it was, however, a good crowd went out by the two ordinary trains, and there must have been fully 400 people on the course during the afternoon. The programme that had been prepared was a very interesting one, and the public had the satisfaction of seeing the events started punctually— a point which. many other clubs in this part of the colony, at any rate, totally disregard. The fields during the c*ay were all very fair, and several excellent finishes were seen, notably that in the Novel Handicap, in which Mabel beat Linden by a nose only. The opinion was expressed that the judge's decision was wrong, many of those who were in good positions dedaring it a dead heat, but Mr Snow, who certainly had the beßfc opportunity of watching the result from his box, held to his decision, which was cheered by some and hooted by one or two who were no doubt supporters on the totalisator of the second horse. The meeting was concluded without the slightest hitch, and in plenty of time to allow town people to catch the train. The stewards carried out the arrangements in an admirable manner. Mr Grindley made a firm and successful starter nnd Mr White an efficieut secretary. The totalisator was worked by MessrB 1 Mason and Roberts, who put £1183 through the machine during the day. Following are the results : — MAIDEN PLATE, Of 20bovs. Distance, one mile and a-quarter. 43— Mr J A Duffs eh g Forest King, 4yrs, 8.11 (Hankiuß) 1 27— Mr T George's b m Fanny, syrs, 9.0 (TDyer) 2 21— Mr J Christie's b g The Don, 4yrs, 8.11 — (Loughlin) 3 91 . The Don got all the worst of the start and Fanny the best of it. Going towards the rear of the course the favourite went up to Fanny, and until within half a mile from home the pair were racing close, with The Don half a dozen lengths behind. Forest King then drew out, and entering the straight he led by half a length. All the way to the end Dyer did his utmost to bring Fanny up, but the leader bad too much left) in him, and. he was landed a winner by a short length ; The Don two lengths behind Fanny. Mr Grindley had very . little trouble in effecting a beautiful start. Mon Loup was the first to show in front, and passing the stand he led, with Cinnabar second and La Rose next. Towards the back of the course Cinnabar got on level terms with the leader, and Milord assumed third position. La Rose, Forest King, and Warlock followed in that order. A furlong from the half-mile post Milord raced past the leaders and soon had an advantage of a good three lengths, La Rose joined Mon Loup and Cinnabar, who were still together, and entering the straight the three were in a bunch, racing hard. Milord, however, could not be dispossessed of his position, which he maintained to the close, winning easily by three lengths, Cinnabar second and La Rose a good third. Mon Loup was fourth, Warlock fifth, and Forest King last. Time, 2min 56*ec. Dividend, £3 10s. The remainder trotted well, and at the end of the first mile Billy led, Lorrie being next, and then came Emma, Sam, and Ruby. In the second mile Ruby passed all the horses excepting Billy, and before much of the third mile had been travelled ebe also passed him, and to the end had things all her own way, winning by 50yds from Informer, who came well in the last mile. Then followed Billy, Ranger, and Sam in that order, the remaiader being a long distance in the rear. Emma and Orange Grove gave up the contest at the end of the second mile. Time, 9min lsec. Dividend, £1 18s. NOVEL HANDICAP, Of 2580V8. Towards the half-mile post Fanny and Mabel went to the front, and were soon on Linden's girths, the remainder racing close up, except Riccarton, who was steadily tailing off. Coming into the straight the favourite had a very slight advantage, and when fairly on the way to the post it was seen that his strongest opponent was Mabel. A rattling and most exciting flutter ensued to the finish, both horses racing neck and neck as fast as they could go. When within a dozen yards of the judge's box they were still level, but at the finish Mabel had managed to get her nose in front, and was declared the wiDner, with Linden second, and ( Fanny an excellent third. The judge's decision appeared to meet with dissatisfaction from some of the public, who apparently looked on the race as a dead heat. The time was lmin 53§seo. Dividend, £8 Is. The winner was bought in for .£lO. Apres Moi got the best of the start, and Lady Bell the worst. In the first f nrlong Hollowback and Lady Bell went up to Apres Moi, and the trio took a lead of four lengths from Cinnabar. Apres Moi was not, however, to be displaced, and soon again held premier position, with Lady Bell and Hollowback, in that order, as her closest companions. Cinnabar then went up and was soon on even termß wiih Apres Moi and Lady Bell, Hollowback falling ba-k. Coming into the straight Cinnabar was going very strong, and to the finish there was an exciting race which resulted in Cinnabar winning by a length, Apres Moi a good third, and Hollowback a fair fourth Time, lmin 25seos. When the horses had heen sent on their way Stablejacket and Sweetbriar went to the front, but beforethe half-mile post was reached Linden was with them, and the three raced hard into the bend. AUTUMN MEETING. This meeting was conducted under rather unfavourable auspices, the day being dull, and a slight drizzle coming on in the afternoon. The attendance waß not much affeoted, but there was a laok cf interest in the meeting in consequence of the small fields. A protest was entered by the owner of the Becond horse against Mischief being awarded the stake on the ground that the winner had been wrongly nominated, having run under the name of Norma at the Maniototo, and that the rule conneoted with the alteration of names had not been complied with, Evidence was taken and the matter discussed, and Mischief was disqualified.
