SHOOTING ACCIDENT.
Three young men named Burton, Eva, and Wallace went up Shag Valley last Thursday afternoon for a week's shooting. They were journeying near Waihemo on Sunday afternoon, Burton and Eva being in a trap, and Wallace walking beside them on the road, when the ktter's gun, which ho was carrying, ncc'nientally went off, tho bulk of the contents lodging ju Burton's left shoulder, snd the remainder in Eva shoulder nnd arm. Burtnu, who is ahonfc 20 years of ago, was removed to Mr A. D Bell's residence, and was afterwards taken down to Palraerston for medical assistance. Dr Mii\n« sell, who was sent for, left town at, 7.45 a m. on Monday to attend tbe su'l'erers. He arrived ab Palmerston at 10.45 am. and found B-.irton in a very low state, principally through loss of blood. The wound was more serious than was at first supposed, the left arm being almost shot clean away, It was found necessary to amputate the limb, and this the doctor did, taking the arm off from the shoulder. Burton appears to have suffered considerable pain, and also to have lost a large quantity of blood, but everything was done for him that willing hands
could do until the dootor arrived. Barton's father, the well-known photographer of this city, also went up to Palmerston on Monday Eva's wounds were found to be very slight. Further particulars to hand regarding the shooting accident that happened at Waihemo (Shag Valley) show that the occurrence took place on Saturday morning about 10.30. There were five in the party— viz , Henry L. Bell, F. W. Gresham, Wm. Wallace, Ernest E. Eva, and Harold Burton, They were travelling in their trap, when the three firstnamed got out to shoot some rabbits, leaving the other two driving along, and as Wallace alighted on the ground his gun went off through some unexplained cause and inflicted the injuries on Burton and Eva, as stated by us yesterday. Dr Hislop attended to the sufferers on Sunday night, and is now doing what he can for Burton, Eva having returned to town. A telegram was received in town on Tuesday afternoon from Dr Hislop stating that Burton was getting on remarkably well, and that hopes are now entertained of his recovery.
