SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the board, held on Wednesday, 2nd April, was attended by the Chief Commissioner (Mr J. Sponce), Messrs Denniston, Kinroes, and Cowan.

Alexander Tjiyl,or wrote requesting the withdrawal of an application for an area two days after it was' received? and asking the return of the deposit lodged.— lt was observed that there was no provision for suoh a course, and hence a difficulty. The ground of withdrawal was that the amount fixed for improvements was excessive— more than they were worth .--Mr Denniston was in favour of granting the application, but admitted the difficulty, the act requiring that in such a caBO the deposit was forfeited.— After discussion the request to withdraw was granted, but the deposit forfeited. ' Elizabeth Brown applied to purchase a small island— about three acres— in the Mataura, near Tuturau.— Granted at 20s per acre. John James offered 18s per aore for an area specified on Seaward Mohb.— Held over for inquiry. Certain settlers In Morley village wrote asking for a reduction in the price of their lands.— Referred to the valuators.

James Johnston, Seaward Bush, wrote complaining of misdirections in putting up a dividing fence, and loss austained in consequence. — No aotion taken.

Elizabeth Fosbinder asked to surrender the lease of Bun 434, as she was in poor health and the rental was excessive.— On the motion of Mr Cowan it was resolved to recommend the Minister of Lands to accept the surrender. Jeremiah O'Brien offered Is per annum for anarea at Slopedown Point for grazing purposes.— Refused, as mining pursuits might be interfered with. Richard Bell and Alexander Neiderer applied for a lease of certain sections at Oteramika Gorge —Resolved to grant grazing licenses at 6d per aore annually from year to year. Alexander Taylor offered Is per acre for a 14 years' lease over the mining reserve at Ohatton for grazing purposes.— To be informed that the board could only grant a year to year license, whioh it was willing to do. Arthur Tralll,. represented by Mr Hout, wrote that he had spent largely on improvements on Hun 425, Stewart Island, to make it profitable, without result, and he now asked for an extension of the lease or acceptance of the surrender of it.— Mr Dennlston moved that the Government [be recommended to accept the surrender, and put up the run again with valuation for improvements.— Agreed to. Owen Fox complained that for a deferred payment section he purchased at 25a per aore he was through some mistake called on to pay 30s per acre. —Matter to be attended to.

The following deferred-payment applications were granted: -Mr J. Hammill, section 43, block VII, Oteramika Hundred; John Devine, section 23, block XXV, Bast Gore ; John Day, section 25, block XXII, Bast Gore. Perpetual leases were granted the following applicants:— Finlay M'lepd, 610 acres In block It, Wendonside, subject to payment of valuation ; George A. Darley, 199 acres, section 45, Waiau. John Gibba (Invercargill Hundred), John M'Donald (Wallacetown), Alex. MTheraon aud Dugald M'Pherßon (Forest Hill) were granted their appllcationa to complete purchase. Michael Shennan applied to purchase 22 acres, section 121, Eyre district,— Granted. The application' of W. A. Moffett to transfer Run 415 to P. A. Vyner was granted, Y. J. Pankhurst, Riverton, was granted 101 acres in block I, Jacob's Elver district, on perpetual lease. Matthew Poultney (Seaward Bush) and James Noble (Hodgkinssn) were granted their applications to capitalise. An offer by John Ravenscrof t to take up two sections in Hodgkinson village was held over for a report. The transfer of a deferred-payment section, in Riverton to Stephen Burgess was sanctioned. An applicant for a coal mining area was instructed to lodge the 'survey fees— three months allowed to locate the' area. The board then considered the reports submitted by Mr Kinross and Mr Mussen on the deferred payment land, a very large number of the settlers interested being present. Though some made strong efforts to' have still further reductions made the amended figures were all adhered to by the board. Hokonui Distkict (Long Ridge.)

[fn explanatory notes the valuers state that of the above the first 14. though of inferior quality, are near a railway station ; the next five from one to three miles from Rlversdale, and the remainder near that township.] Hokonui Distkict,

In a note to the above the valuers reported that the sections are situated around Balfour, the most distant belDg seven miles from the railway station ; that there is little difference in the quality of the land ; the surface looking well with fair natural pasturage. Subsoil olose and hard ; too soft In wet weather ; too hard in dry seasons. AH crops required manure, and if that were not given the land would soon be exhausted, while the settlers affirmed

that It would not pay to apply artificial manures though oropping is more depended on than stooft. Cattle Flat (Hokonui).

The above are reported to be specially liable to sudden flooding by the Mataura. Much labour has been spent by the settlers in protective works, but aerious loas is still caused in land, crops, and stock. The sections are from 12 to 15 miles from Balfour. Invbrcargill Hundred (Oxatara),

The above are from six to nine miles from Inveroargill. Of the soil the valuers report portions swampy and portions too sandy, but most of good and easily worked. The licensees are nearly all of small raeam, and require to engage In other work ; if this were more plentiful the laud would be more valuable. Some of the sections were taken up more from accessibility than the quality of the soil. LINTLEY VILLAGB.

The above are from three to four miles from Lumsden and Josephville. P.L. Land in Holmsdale.

Theae are all close to Castle Bock station.—Southland Times.
