PERSONAL NOTES.
It is supposed that the income of the Duke of Westminster is about £800,000 per annum.
The will of Eliza Oook has just been proved. In addition to her freehold, Beach House, she has left personalty valued at over £5000.
Lord Hartington has always had the English love of compromise and the English good sense in being determined not to carry compromise too far, not to give up the substance under the appearance of merely giving up the form. — Spectator.
General Radetzky, who took a prominent part in the Russo-Turkish war of 1878, died recently. With General Gourko he held the Shipka Pass against the repeated onslaught on the Turkish troops, and afterwards led the Russian forces through the Mtrojan Pass into Roumelia.
Mr Gladstone is 80 years old, no doubt ; but, unless some deadly malady has stolen into his frame unfelt and unperceived, he is still a strong man. His way of taking exercise speaks of more than muscular strength ; while his speeches, his writings, his management, are sufficient proof that his mind is almost as vigorous and alert as ever it was. — Saturday Review.
There is not a leader amongst the statesmen who can see the weak side of his own case as distinctly, and confess it as frankly, as Lord Hartington. He has none of the contentiousness of ordinary politicians. He want 3to win only because he has made up his mind that it will be a great blow to the country if he does not. Otherwise he would be blithe to be out of the fash of the fighting, and able to command his own leisure again. — Spectator.
Of the many stories that have been told of the late Sir William Gull's kind-heartedness none is more striking than that of the patient who, having explained that he had just been obliged to call his creditors together, received from Sir William a cheque for all his past fees, and of all the testimony which has been forthcoming of his tact, none is more convincing than that of his acceptance, from a patient he had attended for two hours in the middle of the night, of a cab fare as his fee.
The Duke of Kent, her Majesty's father, was, in his capacity as an officer in the British army, a most severe martinet, and on two occasious there was a mutiny in the regiment under his command. On one occasion he was ill-advised enough to endeavour to stop drunkenness amongst his men by ordering bis subaltern officers, when drilling their companies, to take an opportunity of smelling the soldiers' breath in order to see if they had been drinking spirits. The Duke of Wellington freely condemned this unfortunate order of the royal duke's.
It is agreed that the strongest man in the Liberal party, after Mr Gladstone himself, is Lord Kosebery. An independent observer might go so far as to say, indeed, that he is the only man of position in it with the true faculties and instincts of statesmanship. Without sharing this high estimate of Lord Rosebery's claim to leadership, his companions are aware that, taking all grounds of competition together— position, wealth, experience, character, faculty, popularity— he stands clear above them. Moreover, he is as ambitious and self-confident as any, and therefore it is hard to see how, save by one of the strange accidents which sometimes interrupt political affairs, he oan be put aside. Yet thai seems to be the idea.— Saturday Review.
