REVIEW OF THE PAST SEASON.

(Concluded.)

The Scotchmen of the Milton Club had a match with their friends the Englishmen of the club on Saturday, 27th April, to decide as to which nationality had the more experienced players at the favourite game, Mr Campbell presenting a jubilee sovereign to the winning side. The local paper states that the Scotobmen had provided a piper, who with his chanter played such glorious music that the poor Englishmen were perfectly discomfited, the drones of the pipes being too much for them. The result was : Scotch, 40 ; English, 35. I have stated above that the Kaitangata Club closed their season with a match between the President and the Vice-president on the 13th April, but I find, on looking over my scrapbook, that they again " closed the season on the 29ch April by a match between the Old Buffers and the Young Duff era, in which the former were victorious, the scores being : Old Buffers, 47 ; Young Duffers, 27. My report goes on to state that the skip of *No. 2 rink of Old Buffers challenged the skip of No. 1 rink of the same clan, a challenge which, of course, was instantly accepted, and the match was played on the Ist of May, and resulted in the challenger being defeated by five points, the scores being 18 to 13. On the 2nd May a complimentary match to Mr G. Dalgleish, of Oamaru, was played on the Phoenix Club's green there. The members of the Oamaru Club were invited, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. The game waa called " Right against Left," and finished in a win for the Rights, who scored 82 against the Lefts, 74, After the match was over an adjournment was made to the bowlhouse, where the toast of the health of Mr Dalgleish was drunk with musical honors, he being about to take a trip to the Old Country, aud cordial wishes expressed that he would enjoy himself whilst there, and have a pleasant voyage home again, to all of which expressions of goodwill and friendship Mr Dalgleish suitably replied. Tbe Christchurch Club closed its season on the 27th April with a match between Scotch and English. As in the Milton match, the Scotch were again victorious. Scores ; Scotch, 63 ; English, 58. The Canterbury Club on the 11th May played their final match of the season, tbe sides being President v. Vice-president. On this occasion the Vice turned the tables on his chief. The Bcores were : Vice-president, 103; President, 100. The game had to be finished with the aid of wax matches to chow where the jack was. The Dunedin Olub closed their season on the Queen's Birthday by playing a subscription rink match of six rinks. The game was 15 heads and resulted as follows : — First draw : Mr Macarthur's rink (14) beat Mr Cowie'a rink (8) : Mr Sneddon's (18) beat Mr Russell's (7) ; Mr Hunter's (14) beat Mr A. Thomson's (12). Second draw : Mr Hunter's rink (19) beat Mr Sneddon's (12 ; Mr Macarthur's a bye. Final draw: Mr Macarthur's rink (19) beat Mr Hunter's 10.

The Tennis and Fives courts were also well patronised. The Roslyn Clt'b also closed its season on tha 25fch May with a match between the President and Vice-president and the Treasurer and Secretary. Two rinks of aix each were formed, and the pame resulted in the first- named winning by 37 points. l'iio Oam&iu Club played a match on May 24, as a compliment to Mr Tait prior to his departure for Christchurch. The game was of three hours' duration, and sides were chosen by the President and Mr Tait. The result was : Mr Tait, 44 ; President, 37. After the match the president proposed toe health of Mr Tait in a very happy manner, referring to him as one of the oldest members of the club, and as one who always bad taken a very lively interest in it and its games. He wished him health and prosperity wherever he went, Mr Tait suitably replied, and said he trusted to meet some of the members in Christchurch next season, when he hoped to renew old associations with them by having a friendly gamo on one of the greens there. I have now, I think, completed my resume of the play of laßt season. Of course many matches must have been omitted, but from the materials at my command I have, I think, made it as complete as possible. Until we have an " Annual " devoted entirely to the game, such must inevitably be the case, and I would urge upon all cluba in the colony earnestly, when they are making up their "estimates" this year, to put a small enm down for such a desirable purpose. Then, if the secretaries of the clubs wi 1 keep their records carefully, a very interesting little publication could be compiled annually, which would be very handy for reference and also useful to keep &b a memento of the progress of tho game.

Additional surveyors are to be put on in the Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and Wellington distriots to get land ready for settlement.
