Bald Hill Flat and Old Man Range. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
September 10. The splendid supply of water has caused the mining industry to be prosecuted with renewed vigour, each band seeming determined to make up for lost time, the sluicers especially being in their glory. White's Beef, which by her numerous calls was fast becoming a white elephant, has at last struck it rich— a splendid lode being struck last week in solid country between the mouth of the main tunnel and the point where the reef was first struck. As there ia a considerable block of count 'y here unworked and the shoot of stone now struck ia under and supposed to be a continuance of the stone where White, the lucky discoverer of this reef, won nearly £2000 worth of gold by sluicing in a short time, there is every likelihood of a very remunerative Eummet's work.
Mr Baker has got his race completed, and has got a few hands on sluicing. Several eighth-shares were sold during the last week in the quartz claim known as Grossans and White's, and this splendid property is at last going to have something done with it. This claim gave splendid returns for some years for surface scratching, and taking into consideration that the lode held good and carried good gold for a considerable depth in the shafts that were sunk on it, it is to be wonder d that the owners have not made some at! empt to develop it systematically long ago. The Belle and Beau party, on the other side of the spur, are getting a pump in readiness with Ihein-. tnntion of more thoroughly testing their property. Should this reef go down it will be one of the most valuable properties in the district, as there is at present a great body of stone in sight earn ing a good prospect. There are several other holdings on this line of reef that will also be likely to have something done to develop them this season. The claims on the Plat are all in full working order again nfer the frost, Messrs Carroll and party being, I am credibly informed, el uicing on an exceptionally rich run, of dirt, which is likely to run into freehold property on tho terrace. The Last Chance claim, lower down, haa also, in spite of the frost, yielded good returns.
