THE DOCK LABOURERS' STRIKE.

The situation with regard to the dock labourers' strike is unchanged. Owing to the liberality of the contributions from Australia, money is plentiful.
September 11
Cardinal Manning is trying feo arrange that the increase conceded to the men by the dock companies shall begin on November Ist instead of January, as the directors stipulated.
The New Zealand' Shipping Company intend to sue the Dock Companies for £1000 damages on account of the detention of the Ruapehu.
The Firemen and Sailors' unions have announced that in future they will only permit the refrigerator engineers to work on New Zealand frozen meat cargoes, and that only on condition they are not touched until the strike is over.
At an adjourned meeting of the Outram Road Board, held on Saturday— attended by Messrs Grant (chairman), D. T. Shand, and Stephenson— tho tender of Mr Traill, at £12 16s Bd, for an all blue gum bridge was accepted. I'lie clerk reported the receipt of Government subsidy on rates to the amount of £38 4s 6d.
— At the time of the Eeformation the average life of a man was 21£ years. In the early part of this century it was rather more than 40i, and certainly has not lessened since. That means that as many people ive to 70 now as lived to 40 300 years ago.
