TWO VIOLETS.
A violet dead in a book— ah me 1
The Bky is blue and the Bpring a-blow ; A violet fresh by the brook— ah me 1
And the winter sky bends low. Aud which is the sweeter — the violet dead,
Pressed on a page where a poet grieves, Or the violet lifting its fragile head From the poplar's fallen leaves ? A dear, dead hope in my heart— ah me! Its wings are furled, but I love it so ; A new hope eager to start— ah me I And I bless it and bid it go. And which Ib the sweeter ? Ah, who can tell ?
So I say to my heart, " In the poet's book Is a violet dead in itß own sweet smell, And another in bloom by the brook."
