MANGANESE MINING IN CALIFORNIA.
There does not appear (says a San Francisco paper of a recent date) to Be very much money iv manganese mining, though, some 1500; tons were mined in this State laat year. The prin-, oipal producing- States are Virginia, Georgia, Arkansas, and North Carolina, whioh produced in 18S7~the.Iatestavailable8tatisticfl-34,524;t0n5, worth 333>844db1, or 9dol, 67 cents per ton. 1 The,
average value of the ores of the" several States varied in that year from 2dol in North Carolina to 12dol 79 cents in Virginia; the Arkansas value being sdol a ton, and Georgia value sdol 74 oe'nts. The range of raluos in Virginia was from 4iol 13 cents to20dol ; in Georgia from 2dol 50 cents to 6dol 50 cents; while in Arkansas tha uniform price of sdol was given as the value of the ore. These values are free on board carts or cars at the mines. Where ore is sold delivered on>cars at localities distant from the mines, the cost of oarting the ore to'cars or to the locality is to be deducted from the f.o.b. price. Virginia produces most of the manganese ore mined in .this country, its production iv 1877 being 19,835 tons out of the total 34,524. This ore comes from the Crimora mine. It is estimated from the best data obtainable that the production of manganiferous iron ores containing silver in the Rocky Mountain regions in 1872 was come 60,000 tons, valued at lOdol per ton.
