King Humbert of Italy had a triumphal progress through the streets of the city, which were gaily decorated in honour of his visit, and presented a splendid appearance. The popularity of the alliance between Germany and Italy was emphasised everywhere; ,and' the enthusiasm, both of troops and civilians, was pronounced in the extreme. • May 23. At the military banquet held last night in this city in honour of the visit ot King Humbert of Italy, Emperor William, in the course of a speech, referred to the unalterable friendship existing between Germany and Italy. King Humbert 'said the unity of the two countries was a guarantee of European peace, and that the armies of the respective countries knew how to fulfil the great task entrusted ;Up them by the people.. The National Zeitung, in the course of an article this morning, remarks that France is , deceiving herself, :if she thinks ft would be possible to retain, or at any rate increase, to any extent, her influence" in the Mediterranean during an European conflict if Italy were to be hostile to any such ambition. . ' May 27. The reported intention of Emperor William and King Humbert of Italy visitjing Strasburg is officially denied. King Humbert has left for Italy. The farewell between' Emperor William and the King was of the most cordial nature. King Humbert will visit the Empress Frederick at Frankfort on his way home. Rome, May 25. Signor Crispi, Premier, declines to deny the existence of a military convention between Germany and Italy. He deems it sufficient to state that the alliance is very strong. Vienna, May 22.. Count Kalnoky, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has sent a firmly-worded caution to the Prince of Montenegro, warning him against supporting the claim of the pretender Karageorgewitch to the Servian Crown. ; London, May 27. The Nord Deutsche Zeitung warns Austria that the extension of her garrisons in Novi Bazar, between Servia and Montenegro, and the occupation of the town of that name, will be regarded as a cants belli.
