KELSO.

May 21.— The'annual soiree of the Presbytorian \ Ohuroli took place in the soboolhouse on Friday last, i Considering the stormy weather , and the wretched state of the roads, there was a very fair attendance, every part of the district being well represented. The Rev. Mr Wh'yte presided, and after singing the " Old Hundred," tea was served by tile ladies who waited at the different tables, whioh groaned with sandwiches and confeotionery of every description imaginable, a fact whioh speaks volumes for our housewives and daughters. The ladies who presided were: Mrs Wilson, Misses Paton, Hale'row, J. Wili Hams, Jeannie Sectar, and J. Smith. The Bey. Mr ' Whyte, in the absence of the secretary, who left the district a short time ago, read the financial statement of i the charge, which was considered satisfactory. Although not quite up to a sanction charge, with very little energy on the part of the committee it would be very easily 1 raised to that figure: 1 The' meeting'was then addressed by tb.6 Rev. Messrs Birks and' Scorgie, and by Messrs w. and A. M'Kay, laymen. The topics of , the speeches jwere, " OhrlstianUJnion," •• Sanotion Charges," " Slistentation Funds," &c, and they w,e.re all well received. The Tapanui choir, 1 under the Conductorship of 'Mr Mackie, rendered some excellent "music, which wad highly appreciated; At the' conclusion a vote of thanks was passed to the choir, to the speakers, and to the, ladies, who provided, the. eatables, and wai responded to by acclamation. . ' ' Sohoiastio.— Our new teacher,' Mr Malcolm, wu6 has arrived here lately 'with high credentials, has taken charge of our school; and by what I can learn he is the right man in the right place/ It .is ]to be. hoped that ,the school committee will keep up the status of the school s.o to secure the permanent' ''services of Miss Livingstone, who is only here at present as an assistant teacher. '• ■ .•' The Wbatheb. —We are enjoying splendid weather at present and, it , is likely to., continue, as the barometer is still rising. , , - ','
