PERSONAL NOTES.

Mr William Henry Monk, one of the editors of " Hymns Ancient and Modern," died at his residence, Glebe-field, Stoke Newingr ton, on the Ist March, aged 66. Much of Dr Monk's church music has become very popular. For "the Church of Scotland he edited the "Psalter, Anthem Beok, and Hymnal."

"Buffalo Bill's" raache is located on the North Platte, in Nebraska, and contains nearly 5000 acres of fine land. Mr Cody has about 200 head of thoroughbred horses and 2000 to 3000 head of cattle. His residence is a big frame house near the railroad, on the

roof of which is painted in .large letters, "Colonel W. F. Cody's (Buffalo Bill) Scouts Ranche," and over it every day there floats a big American flag. , , • Hugh MacLeod, crofter, Morefield,' parish of Loch Broom, County of Ross, Scotland, was born in the adjoining parish of Assynt, township of Elphin, Sutherlandshire, on the 24th day of November 1783, .so that he is now in his 107 th year. ■He is still •" as straight as a lamp-post." >\'He says he gets up in summer between 5 and 6 a.m., and goes to bed at 9 p.m. In winter ho rises at 8 a.m. and retires at 10 p.m. * , The Right Rev. Dr Ullathorne, formerly Eoman Catholic Bishop of Birmingham, died at Oscotb .College, near Birmingham, at the end of February, aged 82. His medical adviser had given up hope of recovery some time previously. It was largely through Dr Ullathorne's exertions that a stop was put in this country to the system of exportation' for crime. An, industrious writer and an earnest worker, he was created an archbishop a year ago, when, owing to his advanced age, he retired irom, active duty. , The Hon. George Skene Duff died during February at Bournemouth, aged 73. He sat as M.P. for the Elgin Burghs in the Liberal interest from 1847 to 1857. During the greater part of his life he was a vigorous and enthusiastic deerstalker ; and it is recorded that on a single day in August 1880 (when he was 64 years of age), he brought down no fewer than eight stags, -three of them with royal heads, a fourth with 11 tines, and the remaining four of scarcely inferior rank. This was without parallel in the annals of deerstalking in Scotland. Lord George Hamilton, who promises to be the hero — or at .least the prominent figure of the session — is the brother of the Duke of Abercorn, and to that fortunate circumstance owes a great deal of his success in life. He. is fair, thereby forming a striking conorast to Mr Ritchie, who "took the floor" last season, and who is so dark that he has earned the nickname of "Lord Salisbury's black man," whereas Lord George.might be called the white man. Lord George is, moreoyer,■extremely spick and span in costume — black frock coat, smooth trousers with, the faintest stripe, glossy hat of the newest cut, and unostentatious buttonhole of chaste appearance. , M. Carnot is, evidently not a' strong man,, or rather, not an original one ; but he has, we suspect, a certain capacity of persistence which is not unfrequenily found in his type of mind, and, is sometimes a working equivalent for strength. There is something of Lord Iddesleigh about him, .though he is wanting in the quality of humour which so distinctly coloured the thoughts, thpugh not the speeches, of the English statesman. Throughout the late Ministerial crisis he has been pelted with suggestions, frequently offered by the spokesmen of large parties and pressed with extreme energy ; but he has pushed them all aside, and held, to his own plan, which is to form a moderately Radical Ministry, charged to conduct •affairs quietly for a few months, to preside over the Exhibition, and then, " when the existing swell i of the public mind has calmed down," to manage the election's in October. — Spectator. It is not often that the death of an Irish, landlord calls forth such warm expressions of sorrow as Lord Portarlington's. . The mourning of the farmers and peasants on his estates in Queen's County was as general and sincere as if each one of them had lost a nearrelative. And little wonder, too ; for, from the very day Lord Portarlington inherited his estates to the day of his death, the wellbeing of those dependent upon him was his first consideration. He literally lived among his tenants, taking a friendly interest in aS their concerns, and being always ready to

help them in the hour of need, with a timely present, the value of which was enhanced manifold by the kindly manner in which it was given. Lord Portarlington was himself a thorough Irishman, with all the courteous kindliness and ready wit that distinguish his race.

The strength of Sainion was in his hair, and a likd influence still has mighty sway, for what is more potent than a beautiful head of hair. Yet, as in the instance of our similitude, great care is needed for its preservation. Now Mrs S. A. Allen secures thl» result, for when the hair shows signs of falling or turning prematurely grey, her Hair Restorer so fortifies the sources of supply that the filament* are reproduced in their natural colour, and , .with •ugmiQat«a bjim*aoy «ad abundance, 7 '
