MjlY 13.— Although we are now well into the first month of winter, the weather still continues to favour all kinds of outdoor work. Threshing it now all but finished, and the farmers are. busy carting away their grain. The potato 'orops in this district have turned out really well, and considering the bad weather at the beginning of 'the season, fair samples' are to be obtained. , Mining.— There Js nothing much to chronicle in mining matters, except that during the past six months a good number of Europeans have taken to mining, and several are reported to be doing well; A rumour is afloat that a company from Invercargill are going to carry water from the river on to the Scrubby terraces, for the purpose of sluicing ; if this undertaking is brought to a successful issue it will be a good thing for the district.
