THE POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES.
According to the latest official report from America, the population of the United States numbers no fewer, than 61,702,000 souls. The first noteworthy increase in the number of the population of the States took place between the years 18(50 and ,1870, when there was an influx of 7,000,000 of persons ' added the normal population; again, between the years 1870 and 1880 tha addition to the indwellers of the States was quite 12,000,000. The decade from 1880 to 1890 bids fair, according to present statistics, t,o surpass all previous estimates, • as the population is expected to' reach no ( fewer than 15,000,000; /thus more than doubling the numbers of 20 years ago. Up 'to the year 1888 the .number of persons of different nationalities who, from many causes, bad ceased to fmd a foothold upon, their native soil was given as follows :— Of Englishmen in the, United States there are 114,000; Germans, ' 110;000 ; Italians, 46,000; pjE Norwegians there "are 18,000; Swedes, .51,000; of Austrians, 20,000; and of Bohemians, 14,000 souls. The number of Frenohmen who have emigrated to the States is comparatively small, and the major parfc'oi those went on to La Plata. — English Mechanic.
