A blasted oak, towering heavenward high, Rigid and black 'gain«t a lurid sky, Mutely uplifting a piteous cryDesolation 1 A battlefield 'neatb the moonbeams bright, With ghastly faces upstaring white, Blaisy eyes in the glimmering lightDesolation I The broken offspring of man's strong hand Lying far out on the golden strand, Bleaching its ribs in the shifting sandDesolation i A ruined abbey— stone upon stone— With lichens, moises, and weifds o'ergrowu, Standing in solitary jzrandeur aloneDesolation I An empty house, where the lone wind grieves, A raven perched on the dripping eaves, Gardens neglected— paths strewn with leavesDesolation I A barren common, lifeless and dry, Stretching away 'neath the evening sky, Over it gently the breezes sigh— Desolation I A heart grown callous and old, in sin, Never attempting life's battle to win, Kursing the devil that works within — Desolation ! — Hugh Bubt.
