LAND BOARD.
The weekly meeting of the Land Board waß held on Wednesday last. There were present -The Chief Commissioner (Mr J. P. Maitland), and Meßsrs Duncan, Logan, Dallas, and Clark. TuapekiA..— Hanger Hughan reported on the application by D. J. M'Dpnald for permission to occupy 5000 acres of the Tua'peka commonage, and a petition by miners against the «aine being granted. The Ranger stated that as the land had not been set apart by proclamation exclusively for mining, he could not recommend that it should be dealt with as a small grazing run. Mr W. L, Simpson appeared on behalf of the objectors.— The board postponed consideration of this matter until August 7, to allow the petitioners time to decide what they could do to relieve the Government of the cost of keeping the land free from rabbits if they were allowed to continue to use it. B. Oowie applied for a lease of sections 56, 57, and 58,|block X, Tuapeka Bast, and a letter was received from Mr W. Simpson (on behalf of Smyth and others) objecting to the application.— Application declined. Glenkknich.— Hanger Hughan. regarding the petition from deferred payment settlers in block 17, Glenkenich, to have their small farm allotments reduced in price from £3 to £l per acre, reported having inspected the land, and being of opinion that the present price was not too high, especially as land is rising in value, he could not recommend that the reduction be made. — After consideration, the board resolved that ifc had no power to reduce the prices. Abbeahs.— A report was received from the Beceiver of Land Revenue stating that the following persons who Exchanged agricultural leases for deferred payment licenses are in arrear with their instalments : —Alexander M'Lennan, section 5, blook XI ; James Grossan, section 8, block XI, Naseby ; Zekiel Mewhinny, section 3, block XI, Naseby; and William Williams, sections- 27 and 29, block I, Leaning Bock. — Regarding the first case, it was resolved that the licensee must now capitalise or pay up the balance. Consideration of the next two was postponed until it was seen whether the proposed transfer is carried out, and the last named licensee was granted to the Ist of August to pay instalments. Mokhaki.— Mr R. B. Martin, on behalf of J. Hogson, applied to have section 15, block XIII, notified under the Amendment Act 1887, at 10s per acre, and stated his willingness to take sections 7 and 23, on perpetual lease, if opened at that rate. — Referred to Ranger Hughan for report as to what bush sections may be sold, and also as to value of unsold sections. NABKB7.— The Chief Surveyor forwarded survey of certain sections in blook X, Naseby, to be dealt with, namely:— Section 5, 52 acres; section 6,44 acres; section 7, 29 acres ; section 8, 152 acres ; eeotion 9, 179 acres; section 10. 88 acres; section 11, 118 acres. — Recommended for notification. Beaumont and Tuapeka.— Ranger Hughan reported that blocks II and VIII, Beaumont, and block 111, Tuapeka West, were unlikely to be taken up at the present upset of 15»
i per acre, and suggested that the sections be - grouped and offered as ft pastoral run at m ' per acre.— Government to be recommended to i offer for pastoral license, the. land in question no 6 being applied for to purohase, showing it is not require for settlement at present. In the event of the Government approving the board would propose to license for seven years at upset price of 6d per acre The board is of opinion that it is not desirable at present to issue pastoral license over strip of land in Olutha known as Chinaman's Flat. Qxhn 'maru.— The appllcationof Messrs B. and GK Wilscn to purchase for cash about 146 acres in block IV, GHenomaru, adjoining their property, was r*. ferred to the chief surveyor to have some land sun veyed in the locality having regard to Messrs Wilson's application. Maniototo.— Ranger Hughan, respecting the objections taken by J. G. Pearsetagainßt his valuation (£llß 126) of improvements on section 3, block XIV Maniotofcp, reported that his valuation was upon items supplied to him by Mr Fearse Jas to the area of land under cultivation, length of fencing, <fee, and added that further improvements, which, he could [not, include, might have been made since his valua. tion, but he could not make any alteration in tha valuation.— Mr Pearse to be informed accordingly. Alexandra.— The District Land Officer, Clyde, reporting on the applications of Mr W. F. Forest (on. behalf of James, T, S., and J. M. Jackson »nd George Campbell) for a license to raise lignite on 10 acres of land, tifcuated two miles from Alexandra, and on the objections of two leaseholders . to the came, stated that he was given to understand that some of the residents were in the habit of- taking coal from the ground applied for, and that under the circumstances it would be as well for the application to be granted.— License granted for three years at £1 per acre per annum, with £1 1b fee ; price at coal pit's mouth not to exceed 10s per ton. Applications.— The following applications were received for perpetual leases : -James Perry, for section 38, block IX, Glenomaru, for cash; James Demery, for sections 49 and 68 to 76, block 11, Barnslaw, on perpetual lease. — Approved. Leaning Rock —The exchange deferred payment license of * . A. Oliver of sections 47 to 51 and 81 to 84, block I, Leaning Hock, was surrendered for cancellation. — License forfeited for non-payment of instalments due ; not to be reoffered at present, as warden states the land may b8 required for mining purposes. Stbath-Taiehi.— Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. applied on behalf of W. G. Pogson, the licensee of a small grazing run, tor permission for him to reside on Ms freehold adjoining section 12, block X, Strath-Taieri, being within 10 miles of his run.— Grunted. — A similar application was made by the same firm on bf half of Thomas Popham, lessee of small grazing run, block IV, Strath-Taieri.— Granted.
