TAIERI FERRY.

bheeie factory are all we have in the way of manufactures. A paper or pulp factory should pay here, as we have an unlimited supply of the raw material, and many articles are now made of pulp that were once made of wood or other material. There 'should also be room for a flax mill now that fla* is Up in the market. We have plenty of raw material and unlimited water power. Athbn^bum. —The Athenaeum committee have been improving the hall by cutting away the two rooms formerly used as library and reading room, and oo giving 12ft or I4ft more floor accommodation In the length of hall. This was badly wanted, as the hall was decidedly too Bmall for the wants of our population. The books have been removed to a more central place. It is to be hoped that now that the books are in the centre of the town the public will patronise the library better, as at present there are very few subscribers. We pride ourselves on being an intelligent community, but with such a iplendid library unpatronised one would be led to> Infer that our intelligence was picked up haphazard, or else from the columns of the Witness. Amusements.—Lately there has been a dearth of amusements, but there is a change at hand. On the 12th inst. a concert in aid of the braßß band comes off, and after that the.deluge, for with rinking, concerts, and soirees, &c, for the next month or two, all the lost " boba" will be gathered up and disappear from the face of the earth.

Apbil 9.—We are enjoying splendid weather at pre sent although the nights are somewhat foggy, ■which is a drawback to leading in for a few hours during the earlier part of the day. A few more fine days, however, and the crops will be safely secured and in splendid trim. Threshing is the order both by day and night, so to speak, by mills owned respectively by Messrs Fleming, Yorston, and Christie. The bye roads are in splendid order at present, which is of great advantage to millowners, not to speak of the roads themselves. Harvest Home.—Our annual'harveßt home took place in the school on Friday, the sth inst., and was an unqualified success. The young people turned out in great force and ipent a very enjoyable evening. The committee of management—Messrs Mackay, Cragle (James), and Robertson—were most assiduous in their efforts to please all present, and the ▼ote of thanks proposed by Mr James Yorston in a very neat and humorous speech was really deserved. Fabmers' Grievances.—A meeting of farmers took place here on the 4th insfc. to deal with the vexed questions " bags in " and 2| per cent.discount for cash." Mr James Yorston was voted to the chair and briefly explained the object of the meeting, afterwards cslling upon Mr Fleming (Henley), the convener, to give nis views. Mr Fleming at the outset explained that the matter was settled to a certain extent owing to one of the principal grain merchants, who was loud in condemning tbe system of " bagß in," slowly giving way, and advising the farmers in his weekly circular to drop the subject or otherwise suffer, seeing that there is a want of cohesion among the farmers on the matter. It was reeolved to communicate with other centres with the view of combined action being taken to bring the matter to a satisfactory solution as soon as possible. Sudden Death.—Quite a gloom was cast over the district at the very sudden death of Miss M'Bean, daughter of Mr Peter M'Bean, a very old and muchrespected settler in this district. The young lady has been ailing for some time, but her friends did not inspect that her end was so near. Much Bymnathy is felt for the bereaved family.—Occasional Correspondent.
