THE LONDON WOOL SALES.

At tbe wool auctions to-day a better selection was offered; competition was very keen. Former prices were fully maintained. The cargoes by the Dumbartonshire (from Napier), Wave Queen (from Lyttelton), were in time for the sales. April 4. At the wool sales prices were firm at last luotation. April 6. The present series of wool sales will close on May 8. April 7. The wool sales give indication of increasing strength, and an advance is expected, chiefly in fine greasy merinos. Home and foreign buyers are competing with great spirit. Up to date 58,600 bales have been catalogued, of which 56,800 have been sold to the home traders. April 9. Wool is hardening, especially greasy^ merinos. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following cablegrams from fcheir London office: Dated 2nd insi: " The sales opened this day at fully the level of last sales. Attendance of both home and foreign buyers is good, and competition active. The sales comprise about 296,000 bales; 77,000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct."—Dated sth inst.: " Wool.—-The sales gain firmness as they progress." The British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Company have received the following cablegram from Messrs Helmuth, Schwartze, and Co., dated 4th inst. :—" Sales continue very animated. Opening rates are fully maintained." The National Mortgage Company have received the following cable, dated London, April 3:_««Wool sales opened at average advance of 5 per cent, on closing rates last sale, crossbred wool low grades excepted." Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited) have received the following telegram from their head office, dated London, April 7: — " Wool.— Sales active, competition brisk, buyers from all quarters operating freely. Since our last wire the bulk of wools show a rise of Jd to |d per lb." Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. have received the following cablegram from their London house (Messre Sanderson, Murray, and Co.), dated the 6th inst.: —" Market stronger, except for coarse crossbred."
A woman named Mary Ann Wilson has been reported to the police as having been stabbed while asleep in Auckland. It is doubtful if she will recover. She was accompanied by a man named Paget, who had been living with her; but he declares that he knows nothing of the occurrence. Louis Paget was arrested, and was charged at the Police Court on Monday with stabbing the woman Wilson. The case was remanded for eight days.
