CASUALTIES.
At Palmerston North an old woman named Cavanagh was run over by a dray and killed instantaneously. She was riding on tho dray with her husband, and fell off, the wheel passing over her head, completely orusbing the skull. Mr A. Douglas, stationmaster at Riversdalei on the Waimea Plains railway, was seriously injured on the 28th through being crushed by ft truck. He was at once removed to the Invercargill Hospital. He got oaught by the foot in ft crossing and had hi 3 foot smashed by a waggon. Th« flesh is pinched from the inside of the leg ( and the main artery is punctured. Amputation will be necessary, but the prostration .from loss of blood is too great to permit of tbe operation. Peter Kelly, a farmer at Hillend, is in the Invercargill hospital with his legs cut about very badly, having fallen before a reaper. A little girl named Brightwill was accidentally killed at Woodville (Wei.) on Friday evening by falling before the wheels of a break, which passed over the body. Death was instantaneous. A man named William Witt, a settler at Poverty Bay for 40 years, was killed at Makuri on Friday morning. He was driving a dray, when tbe horses were startled. Witt jumped off, but slipped, and the wheel passed over his chest. He died shortly after. Charles Gosling was drowned at Morrmsville (Auckland) on Sunday, while bathing.
