Public Notices. DUNEDIN, 1888. Now In preparation, aud will be issued about toe end of April next. W. J. PRICTOR'S Sjjleudid View of the CITY OF DUNEDIN. w, J, PRICTOR begs to announce that he wa? fortunate enough to secure the services o' \he late MR Q O'BRIEN. Artist and Draughtsman (who was Admitted by all to have had unequalled facility la bringing first-class knowledge of draughtsmanship and architecture to bear on th'.s class of work) to paint a picture of the City of Duuediu fo>t oproduction as a COLOURED LITHOGRAPH. (tie painting was iiuisherl a short while prior to vi r O'Brien'B death, and is pronouueed by competent critics to be not only correct In detail— lndeed. » view of the city as truthful as the reflection Iv a mirror— but to be a highly meritorious and artistic painting, the reproduction of which will be worthy of a place In every home. Accompanying the view there will be a Key Plan indicating the principal buildings In the city and i he notable points In the landscape. I have entrusted the lithographing of the picture, ho the Oaxton Printing Company, whose success in ooloured lithography is so well known. The view will be PRINTED IN 12 COLOURS, •io that proper softness and delicacy of outline may I be assured. i In the Otago Dally Times of the 9th October ap1 .eared the following notice of Mr O'Briens pic ture: — " One of the very beat of tbe many excellent views of Dunedin that have been painted is a large water colour that was finished by the late Mr George O'Brien only a few days before his death. It was executed, we believe, to the order of Mr W. J. I'rictor, for the especial purpose of being chroraolithographed, and the artist has evidently taken uti usual pains over his work. It Is satisfactory and at the same time a little surprising to find that thu necessary attention to detail has not been allowed in iiuy way to fetter the artist. There is nothing at all uramped or artificial about the work which, while au curately portraying the city and its surroundings. has all the breadth and freedom of the ordinary landscape. Of thetwo vantage points from which the most comprehensive view of Dunedin can be obtained W. J Prictor chose the best. Any position to the north, near Logan's Point, commands the oity well, but the distance is too great, while thehills to the southward, whence Mr O'Brien took his sketch, give an equally complete view of the town and bring It much closer The immediate foreground of this picture shows a ijrass-grown declivity, immediately beyond which is ' o be seen Fernhill Club, prettily girt with trees, the Southern Cemetery, &c. From this the whole city stretches away— a very distinct and striking panorama. Although none of the principal buildings are emphasised In the way that sometimes disfigures picturei, they are all perfectly recognisable. St. Matthew's Church, the Iron and Woodware Factory, l<Mrst Church, the Town Hall, Knox Church, and the Univerßlty.&c.can all eaiilybe picked out, while right iway in the background glisten the white monuments of the Northern Cemetery, mere specks In | t.he distance, but standing out plainly against a belt of purple bush. Beyond this again rise the Ravensbourne hills and Mount Cargill, all very accurately Irawn— in faot, the drawing and perspective of the ■vhole pioture is almost faultless. It takes into the left all the higher parts of the oity as far as the High School rectory, and to the right embraces a line view of the harbour, the wharves, and the railvay overbridge. The picture is well although not too brightly lighted, and Mr O'Brien's whole scheme of colouring is very judicious. The contrasts are sufficiently distinct, but the tints are subdued and harmonise very pleasantly. A more promising subject •or the chromo-lithographer could not be wished, and 1 he Caxton Printing Company, who 'have been en \ trustedwith this part of the work, will no doubt be ible to turn out excellent) work. Judging from some similar work they have now In hand they have quite naatered the many difficulties of the process. When eady for issue, the ohromo should command a ready tale, especially as it will represent the last work of m artist whose productions are well and favourably known In this oity." The size of the picture is 34in x 24iii, jo that it will be just within the postal limit. The canvasser will call at every house in Dunedin md suburbs within the next few weeks, and orders ■villbe supplied immediately the picture is ready for issue, about the end of April next.
