The Bendigo correspondent of the Cromwell Argus states that the Cromwell Company are now making good headway with their shaft. The new leader found looks well, and it is believed it will prove a continuation of the Hit or Miss reef. The Jubilee Company are busy crushing, but as they make but little progress with a two-head battery, it is intended to put up five heads. The company are said to have a quarry of payable stone. All the miners round about Bendigo appear satisfied with the results of their labour for the past year. A good many claims have been taken up lately between Bendigo and Rocky Point, and a few parties are getting payable gold, but the great drawback is want of water. The most of the men are paddocking and bos-sluicing the gravel from off the bottom, which contains the most gold.

The Waitahuna correspondent of the Tuapeka Times sendß the following items: — The last rains have enabled the mining claims in this district to commence operations with renewed vigour. The City of Dublin party are getting through a lot of stuff, and their prospects are as satisfactory as ever. The Norwegian party are expecting to have a very good washing-up ; in fact, there is no doubt of it from the appearance of the stuff to be operated upon. Messrs Quilter and party have also a very promising show in front of them. Messrs Kearney, Laffey, and party are also in full swing, and getting through a lot of good-looking dirt, which promises well for their wash-up. The claims on Havelock Flat are now in full swing. One of the parties intend to wash-up soon, and with better prospects than they have had for some time. There are a few Chinese still working on Havelock Flat; some of them are making a living and others do'ng considerably more.
The City and Suburban Reserves Society are moving in the matter of beautifying the Triangle in front of the railway station, and are meeting with support. The objects of the society were brought before Mr Harris, of the firm of Bing, Harris, and 00., who is at present on a visit to the city, and that gentleman at once offered to the president to provide a handsome fountain for the Triangle at a cost of £150 or £200, and also some seats to be placed in the Octagon, similar to those used in the public parks in London. Mr H. Hayman has promised £20 towards the movement. It is understood that Mr Lee Smith and others are also canvassing with the same object in view. We (Nopth Otago Times) have been allowed to make the following extract from a letter received last mail by a resident of Qamaru from a relative in Sydney : — " Melbourne is in a very bad state now.
