NOTES BY SLIP.
The Cup match Phcenix Eleven v. Albion Thirteen, which promises to have a close finish, was commenced on Saturday on the Caledonian ground. Croxferd winning the toss elected to bat on what looked a good wicket, but which turned out a very treacherous one. M'Farlane and Crawford stuck up the bowling of Malcolm and Frith till Montgomery was put on at the former's end. The change at once dissolved the partnership, M'Farlane being clean bowled by a low fast one. One wicket for 27 runs was a good opening for the thirteen, but then the next live fell' for 17. Croxford and M'Kenzie made a fair stand together and brought up 70. At this point of the game it looked well for the Albion, but Montgomery was soon' again at his work of destruction, and the innings closed for 90. With 13 men in the field and a bad wicket the Fhcenix had their work cut out. Indeed, with six wickets down for 28, it seemed a certainty that the innings would come far short of the Albion's. The glorious uncertainty of the game was again proved, for Haskell, Frith, and Montgomery hit the bowling' all over the field. The innings, however, closed for 86, being only 4 behind the Albion's innings. Carr's analysis—3 runs, 3 wickets, 9 balls—reads very well, and goes to prove that the older ones can still hold their own with their more yputhful rivals. Montgomery secured a splendid record—viz., eight wickets for 19 runs. In the short time remaining the Phoenix were fortunate in securing two wickets —M'Farlane and Crawford's —for 6 runs. ■ The Cup match Wanderers Thirteen v. Carisbrook Eleven was commenced on Saturday on the Carisbrook ground. The Carisbrook, batting first, were all out for 57. Dr Fox, going in second wicket down, carried out his bat for a well played 20. Claffey and M'Beath were the bowlers, the former capturing five wickets for 24, the latter four for 30. The Wanderers played out time, scoring 113 runs for nine wickets. Claffey (21), 3mith (22), Cooper (13), Cooke (14), and M'Farlane (16) obtained double figures. Carver and M'Cormack were the most successful bowlers for the Carisbrook. A Wellington telegram states that another heat of the senior cup was played on Saturday afternoon between the Phoenix and Poneke cricket clubs. The former went in first and scored 136, of which number H. Moorhouse made 75 by capital crioket. The Ponekes had lost eight wicketß for 84 runs when the stumps were drawn for the day, W. Kirker being top scorer with 42. The game will be resumed next Saturday.
