The ordinary business was then proceeded with.
DENOTATION.
Messrs Qilmore and Flanagan, village settlers at Goodwood, waited on the council to urge the improvement of road leading to their properties and the other settlers interested. If the council would forego the rates, they offered to do the work themselves. A motion was carried to the effect that the council subsidise the rates pound for pound for two years, the work to be undertaken by the Bottlers and to be carried out under the supervision of the inspector.
PETITIONS.
Thirty-one ratepayers and miners on the Deep Dell grazing runs petitioned the council to form road through Horse Flat leading to the block. They pointed out that they had suffered much inconvenience and expense in consequence of there being no practicable road by which they could get their fencing and other necessaries to their land. — The petition was received, and the council agreed to instruct the inspector to prepare plans and specifications for the work, and to call for tenders for same by next meeting.
Twenty-three ratepayers petitioned the council and expressed themselves favourable to Mr Hay's motion to let the surfacing of the county roads by contract, by which they stated a saving of one half would be effected in the cost of surfacing under the present system. — Received.
CORRESPONDENCE .
The Crown Lands department, Dunedin, wrote intimating that a voucher for £118 2s lOd had been sent to the Treasury, Wellington, for payment, being the amount due, less £1 16s 6d, from Tillage settlement areas. — Received. A circular from the Public Works department, Wellington, was read, enclosing copy of bill to amend the Public Works Act,— -Received. The Secretary to the Exhibition Committee,
Dunedin, wrote inviting the co-operation of the council, and support in promoting the success of the proposal.— Received. . The Treasury, Wellington, intimated that £1 15s 6d, goldfields' revenue, and 7s, gold duty, had been remitted to the Colonial Bank, Palmerston, to the credit of the council.—Received. Mr A. Simpson, Macres, wrote suggesting that the council should apply to the Minister of Mines empowering the postmaster at Macraes «o issue miners' rights, the effects of which would be an increase of revenue in this direction. — Received, and referred to the warden at Naseby to ascertain if postmaster is a suitable person. The Chairman of the Mount Highlay Consolidated Company, Naseby, wrote asking the council to have a dray road laid off from the Four-mile to the Mae'reburn creek, as the company proposed to erect machinery at a cost of from £2000 to £3000 to open up :he mine in the course of the next 12 months.— Received, and deferred for consideration until next meeting. Circulars were read from the secretaries to the Charitable Aid Board, the Hospital and Benevolent Institution, Dunedin, re the election of trustees', &c. — Received, and Mr John Muir was appointed the council's delegate. Mr Ewan McDonald, Shag Valley, applied for a deviation of the road leading through section 10, block 111, Highlay, to section 8, block VII, Waihemo. — Received, and the council granted the application, Mr M'Donald doing the work himself.
Mr H. M'K&y, Inch Valley, wrote asking the council when they intended to repair the district road leading to his place, the approaches to Shag river on both sides being in a very bad state ; and also one of the bridges in the road line required repairing.— Received, and referred to the inspector. Mr J. Jack, Shag Valley, applied to have a few chains of the road leading to his place from the Main road gravelled, which in wet weather was impassable. — Received, and the inspector was instructed to call for tenders for the work.

Macrae's Riding. — In this riding the roads were in good order. The road to Maslin's Ferry had been reformed, but required new culverts. The Fillyburn bridge required repairs, and in the Decpdell runs no further progress had been made with tho road, and some repairs were required to the Four-mile road. — Received. Green Valley Riding.— ln the upper part of this riding the surfaceman had been discharged. Some gravelling between the Pigroot and Red cutting was required, and from present end of metal at Daddy's Pinch towards Pigroot. He had examined road applied for through section 10, block VII, by Mr D. Muir on Mr Walsh's properly, aud M'Leod's road through Matheson's property. — The report was received, and tho council resolved to interview Mr Walsh to ascertain if he will agree to a right-of-way to Shag river; and the inspector to report on the probable cost of road through M'Leod's. Dunback Riding. — In this riding the main road required gravelling in many places, and tho Sfconeburn road required formation and culverts for four miles. — Received and resolved that three-quarters of a mile be gravelled between M'Cormack's creek and Black Pinch, and that £50 be expended in gravelling from main road to Davis' corner. Blue Mountain Riding.— The roads in this riding are all in good repair ercept the main road, which required gravelling from Palmerston to Dunback ; and two bridges on Kendall's road required repairing, and a cutting at Monro's attended to.
CONTRACTS.
The tender of Mr Peter Lunham was accepted for contract 106, gravelling on Bushy road, at Is per cubic yard. The unsuccessful tenderers were : Messrs Hourston and Kendall, Is Id ; James Kitchen, Is 2d; David Phillip, Is 4d; James Guffie, Is 4d ; James Ritchie, 2s Id.
FINANCE.
Accounts for the month amounting to £192 6s 8d were passed for payment.
