TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tho annual meeting of tho above body was hold at Lawrence on Wednesday, Mr H. C. Clayton presiding. The retiring Chairman complimented the council on the gratifying improvement in their finances. During his term of office, extending over two years, the liabilities of the council had been reduced from £9432 to £5755 6s lid, making a difference in their favour of £3776 14s Id. ThiH pleasing result was in the face of a risein the contribution to hospital and charitable aid, which had risen from £569 in 1886 to £875 18s lid lasfc year, or an increase of £306 18s lOd. Again, the county revenue during his first year of office was £7858, whereas during the last year it was only £6000, or a falling off of £1858. The official expenditure had been reduced from £926 for the year ending Ist December 1887 to £418 12s for tho ensuing year, making a saving of £508 12s. The estimated receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year were : Receipts, £6000; expenditure, £4000— giving a credit balance of £2000, which would make a welcome reduction in their overdraft.
ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN,
Or M'Nab proposed— " That Cr Cotton be chairman for the ensuing year." He referred to the necessity of having an outsider in this responsible position. Their experience with Cr Clayton demonstrated conclusively that the interests of the council were safe in the keeping of 80-called outsiders.
Cr Bennet seconded. Mr Cotton was a very suitable man, and would, he believed, make a capital chairman. The motion was put and carried unanimously
