THE EXHIBITION.
(From Oub Own 'Correspondent.) Wellington, November 28.
Mr Twopeny had a two hours' interview with the Premier aud the Hon. Mr Fergus this afternoon, iv which he sketohed out the scheme for the proposed Dunedin Exhibition. He does not feel at liberty to give me any account of what happened at the interview, further than that Ministers expressed generally favourable opinions. The scheme sketched out was for an exhibition in 12 departments : —
Ist. — The ordinary agricultural, pastoral, mineral, and manufacturing exhibition, as at the Wellington Exhibition, only more extensive. 2nd.— The intercolonial courts, which he proposes should include not only Australian colonies, but Canada, India, Fiji, and the French and German colouies in the Pacific.
3rd —The historical deparfcmenh.'.consisting of objpets to be collected from all parts of the colony, museums, and private owners, in illustration of the history of the early settlement of New Zealand. # 4th.— The Maori department, to include a complete representation of Maori life and manners.
sfch. — The South Sea drpsrtruent to do the same for the islands of the Pacific. (In both cases it is proposed that live natives should be induced to form part of the show by being allowed to sell their products, and with the help of which figures their customs will be illustrated). 6th. — A Tourist court, to consist of representations by paintings, photographs, and otherwise of New Zealand scenery, with arrangements for visitors to proceed by ticket bought on tho spot to any scene that may strike their fancy. A similar arrangement is proposed for enabling visitors to the exhibition to bo induced to visit the 'district iv which any particular exhibit i& produced, or the factory, as the case may be.
7fch department: Processes of manufacture.— It is intended to offer special facilitias for inducing exhibitors to show their manufacture of articles on the spot, so as to give life and movement to the exhibition; articles made on tbe spot to be allowed fc > be sold, bufc no other. Bth department : Education — To be an attempt at giving in a practical form a representation of the various educational appliances used in the different colonies, and, if possible, to include the educational exhibits now being shown in Melbourne from European couutries.
Obh department: Pictures — To include the New Zealand court collection and as many pictures as can bo got from the British collection iv Melbourne, a* weJl as from tho works of foreign artists exhibited there.
10th.— Other works of art.
11th. — Machinery applicable to Now Zealand industries, but in this department exhibits to be accepted from all parts of the world so long as they are applied to the development of New Zealand industries.
12th department. — Mineral, geological, zoological, and other collections completely illustrat n$ the mineral history of New Zealand. Special arrangements are also to be made for the encouragement of individual industry by a scheme for giving prizes to the individual artist as well as the manfacturing employe.
Mr Twopeny stated that he hoped that the above scheme would be considerably developed and improved upon, and pointed out to the Ministers that, it constituted an entirely new departure in exhibitions, being in many respects of quite original character, and thus likely to attract considerable attention not only in Australia but even in England, if the Maori, South Sea, and tourists and scientific collections were well worked up. After some conversation with the Premier and Mr Fergus, it was arranged that he should lay the scheme before thu Cabinet to-morrow, together with tbe request that he has to make to the Government. Ministers seemed impressed by rho fetiteramit that no direct subsidy was askud for aud the popular character of the movement.
