OUR AUCKLAND SPORTINGLETTER.
(Fhom Oto Special Spobtino CobbeBpondent.)
Auckland, November 28.
There is very little wagering being done on the Auckland Cup, and from what I can at present see no alteration need be looked for until it is known what horses are coming from the South. I am told that Lochiel is almost certain to come up. I last; saw 100 to 14 written about his chance. Manton and Son-of-a-Gun are each quoted at 4 to 1, while 6 to 1 can be obtained about Hilda.
Nelson is still galloping sound, and Hodson is now commencing to slacken him out in real earnest.
Hilda has been eased since the Spring meeting, but she will require very little galloping to have her cherry ripe. Lady Norah is striding along nicely, but I have a doubt about her being able to get to the end of a sound run two miles.
Friendship, the winner of the last A.R.C. Easter Handicap, last week dropped twins (a colt and filly). The colt died, but the filly is still living. The total number of foals at Sylvia Park this season is 44, 24 being fillies and 20 colts. Mr J. Marshall, the owner of Necklet and Pearl Shell, returned from Victoria yesterday. Ho won a good stake by the victories of his fillies in the Maribyrnong Plate and Oaks. The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club held their sports on Saturday, and they passed off with great success. The bicycle contest created a great amount of interest. The Mile Race was won by the scratch. man, A, P. Clark, beating a large field, in 3min 25sec. The Three Mile went to A. G. Buchanan, who had a start of 00yds from the scratch man <, Clark). The time was 7min llsec. Buchanan, with a start of 300 yds, also carried off the Five-mile Race, beating Clark and Howard (scratch men) easily, the time being 18min 14sec. A very smart runner named Elmslie made his debut, and carried off the lOOjds, 150 yds, and 200 yds in splendid style, the time in each race being very fast. The Quarter-mile Handicap was a great contest, and was won by E. H. Clayton (23yds) by a foot from J. Hutchison (22yds), the time being 53sec.
