THE TAIERI SHOW.

Committee of Management— Messrs W C Todd (president), Robert Todd (vice-president), Robert Gawn, James Oughton, John Allan, David Grant, James Shand, Joseph Allan, John Findlay, Arthur Robertson, David T Shand, James Cullen, John Sutherland, Samuel Young, John Shaw, Donald Manson, Robert Dickie, David Andrew, Thos Craig,

David Sutherland, Peter Grant, Wm Jaffray, John Shennan, James Gow. Hon. Veterinary Surgeons— J GDouglaßß, Robert Dickie.

The twenty-seventh annual show of Taieri Agricultural Society was held at Mosgiel on Tuesday under circumstances the reverse of favour* able, the weather being very cold and showery. This no doubt kept many of the country people and several from Dunedin from visiting the show. The attendance considering these adverse circumstances was, however, very encouraging, and leads to the conclusion that the alteration made this year in the date of the show will not interfere with its success financially, while from an exhibitors' point of view it is much to be preferred., The entries showed a slight increase upon last year's, the number being 393 as against 387. The feature of the show, as is always the case at the Taieri, was undoubtedly the splendid turn out of draught horses. There were 73 entries as compared with 68 last year, and the quality all round was of a very high standard indeed, while in some of the rings it was quite exceptional. For instance, the ring of three-year-old fillies was remarkable for the good quality of all of the five animals shown, and the judges expressed an opinion that even the unplaced fillies would not have disgraced any show ring. Among the stallions there were also some fine specimens of theClyesdale breed. For the champion prize three horses entered the ring, and Laird of Kilbride succeeded in beating Muir'6 three-year-old Glen Gordon and Cullen's yearling. For the champion prize for the best mare Mrs Nimmo's Alice Maud was victorious over Gawn's Pride's Darling, Patrick's three-year-old and yearling, and Mrs Findlay's two-year-old. In light horses there were, as usual, only poor fields. The hacks made the best class, and the prize-winners were really very fine horses, especially the first prize-taker. In the class for ponies under 12 bands high, the judges considered the second prize-taker to be far and away the better pony in point of quality, though on account of his age and staleness they could not conscientiously award him a first prize. In shorthorns and Ayrshires the entries were not numerous — in fact they were fewer than last year ; but in Ayrshires in particular, the fine cattle of Messrs A. and J. M'Farlane, which were shown for the first time this season, attracted a good deal of attention. The change in the date of the show had the effect of considerably improving the turn-out of sheep, especially in Leicesters, the number of entries totting up to 35, as against only nine last year. r 4 The Messrs Allan took the principal prizes in this class with some first-class sheep. Thera was also an improvement in poultry and in dairy produce ; though the entries were six fewer than last year, the show was a remarkably creditable one. Mrs R. Muir w,on the prize for having scored the most points. The committee carried out their work in a businesslike manner, and the judging, with the exception of that in the class for jumping, was concluded at 5 o'clock. The Mosgiel Band played selections of music during the day. The Dunedin and Taieri Women's Christian Temperance- Unions had a large tent, on the ground, and besides selling temperance refreshments, books, and some needlework, they provided an excellent lunch. Theyssemed to do a good business, aud the young ladies who had volunteered their services as waitresses had a very busy time of it. The object of the unions, however, was not a money-making one, and as the expenses were heavy, little or no profit will be made ; but the promoters are quite satisfied that their efforts have helped to diminish the intemperance which is sometimes only too common at such gatherings Mr D. Vannini catered in the publican's booth. Appended will be found the •
