LAWRENCE.
Noy ember 1 .—Yesterday a young mannamed Scotfc died rather suddenly at Waitahuna. Mr Coroner Revell held an inquest in the afternoon, and after hearing the evidence of Dr Blair the jury returned a verdict of" Death from natural causes." The Weather has been for the past few days something to be remembered. We hive had wind and rain in abundance. Today we have had wind, sunshine, snow, and rain almost all at the same time. It is very cold, and the hills close to town have had a white mantle on them. The back ranges are still covered, but the sun (which has just broken out strong) will soon make it disappear. The barometer since the 20th ult. has not ranged higher than 29. It is to be hoped that we will have some decent weather after this burster. The unsuitable weather will prevent the match of bowls and alao the opening cricket match from taking place. Mining.—The following is the monthly report of the manager of the Blue Spur Gabriel's Gully Consolidated Gold Mining Company (Limited):—"l have the honour to inform you that there is nothing of special importance to report, except that a flood on the night of the 22nd caused trifling damage to the claim, which has since been repaired. The Waiporl and Tuapeka water races have suffered some damage, necessitating an expenditure of labour as well as a loss of water, thereby interfering with our gold returns. lam steadily pushing on working my way into better ground, and hope to be able to report more favourably of our doings. The accounts of the Waipori Water Race Company are very heavy items on the company, the three months' rent for water from July 5 to October 4,1888, having been paid. Gold returns for October, £618 15s; expenditure, £450 0s 6d; balance in favour of receipts, £168 14s 6d." School Matters —The examination of all the schools is now finished, and the result is very satisfactory. At the Waitahuna West school Miss Nicol secured 100 per cent, in the four standards that she teaches. Mr Tindall, at Evans' Flat, secured 95 per cent.; and Miss Hilgendorf, the mistress of the Tuapeka Flat scho'l, for her five months' teaching, obtained 82 per cent. Mr Neill (Blue Spur), Mr Selby (Wetherston's), and others all obtained good results. — On the evening of the 9th we are to have a concert in aid of the Lawrence District High School funds. The children are going to perform the kinderspiel, "Old Friends and New Faces." Mr Stenhouse is practising them daily, and I am sure anything that he takes in hand will be well done. Several ladies and'gentlemen have volunteered their services for the second part of the programme.
