Melbourne, October 22. At Flemiogton this morning Whakawai did the only gallop of importance, covering a mile with the greatest ease in lmin 50£ sec. The latest betting on the Melbourne Cup is 8 to 1 on the field. There are inquiries for Whakawai, Chicago, Mentor, Cyclops, Tradition, and Ensign, but no business has been transacted. The latest quotations for the Melbourne Cup are: — 8 to 1 agst Mentor (tk) 10—1 Tradition (tk and off) 100 — 8 Whakawai (off ; 100 to 7 wtd) 100-5 — Arsenal (tk and off).
The backers of horses in the Caulfield Cap are slowly settling up. By Chicago's win the ring have been struck rather heavUy, and have had to pay away £50,000. October 23. At Flemington this morning Melos and Aus tralian Peer in company covered a mile and a« half i n 2min SOsec. Moo tor finished two miles in 3min 48gsec. Tabard and Pakeha have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. October 24, Speculation on the V.R.C races has under* gone but little change since last quotations. Volley has advanced to 8 to 1 for the Derby and in consequence both Carbine and Melos have receded, 5 to 2 being offered against either. Lamond and Cuirassier have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup.
