MfISGIEL AND SAWYERS* BAY. An important match between the members of the Dunedin Club and a combined team of the members of the Mosgiel and Sawyers' Bay Clubs took place on Wednesday night in the club room, Coffee Palace. There were 29 players a side. Mr John P. Bell captained the town team, and Mr John Rankin, of Moagiel, captained the combined team. After the match was over the combined team entertained the Dunedin players at supper. Mr A. Davidson, president of the Sawyers' Bay Club, presided, and Mr J' P. Bell occupied the vice-chair. The Chairman in a few words expressed his surprise at the great beating they had received, but he felt confideut that .with a little more practice and Byatematic study they would be able to- turn the tables on their opponents before long. The match had been conducted in a mo3t gentlemanly manner, bo he had much pleasure in proposing hearty cheers for the victorious team Mr J. P. BttLi. congratulated the Dnnedin Club in scoring such a big victory, for no one was more surprised at the large majority than himself. However, hehadno doubt fortune would smile on their oppjnonts more favourably on the nexl occasion. He had muoh pleasure iv asking his team to give three rounds of cheers to their kind entertainers, which was heartily responded to. Play commenced at 8 and was finished by 10.15 p.m., and the gathering broke up at 11 o'clock to enable the country players to catch the lhet train. The catering was excellent. Ferqusson and Mitchell v. Times and Witness. This match was piayed on Saturday night, with 12 players a side, in th« Chess and Draughts Club Room at the Coffee Palace Great interest was taken in tho contest as it i 3 the first shop match that has taken place U\ Dune iin, and the room was filled with spectators during the progress of the game. Lonsdale (chairman), addressed the company. He dilated on the social advantages of such friendly matches, and said it afforded him much pleasure to see how successful this, the first match of the kind in Dunedin, had been. He also expressed the hope that the teanjs would soon meet again, and give the Times' players an opportunity of turning the tables. He called for three cheers for the victorious team, which was heartily responded to. Mr W. J. M'Connell, in replying on behalf of Fergusson and Mitchell, said he was very pleased to note the friendly spirit that had pervaded the whole proceedings, and agreed with the chairman in hoping it would not be long ere the two teams meet again. On concluding his remarks, he asked for three cheers for the Times' players, which were given with musical honours. A vote of thanks was passed to the Chess and and Draughts Club for the nse of the room and boards. Mr D. R. Hay responded on behalf of the club, and stated that the club would be happy at any time to give up the room for any similar match. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mr Joseph Abernethy for services rendered in promoting the match. During the evening the company was favoured with songs, &c., by several gentlemen.
