Contrary to expectations the demand was only moderately active, and although the supply was far short of butchers' weekly requirements,, prices did not rule more than 10s per bead on an, average above last week's rates. Store Cattle.— A very fair demand exists for these, and sales can be made of all descriptions. Three and four-year-old steers are chiefly inquired for, but at present very few lots are offering. Store Sheep.— Young crosibreds are inquired for, but as hardly any of these are off ring business transactions are limited.— Rkhd, Maclean, and Co. sold privately during the week 900 four and six-tooth crossbred ewes and wethers at 'satisfactory prices.— H. M. Drivsr reports having sold privately during week 800 crossbred ewes at a satisfactory figure. « Sheepskins.— Full catalogues were again offered at the usual auction sales on Monday, which were attended by all the local bujer3. Competition for all classes was brisk, and prices ruled quite up to previous week's values. Country dry croasbrtd skins brought from Is lOd to Is 7d ; do do merinos. 4s 3d to Is Sd ; pelts, 9d to Is Id ; butche s'gieen crossbreds, 5s to 3s 7d ; green merinos, 3s 4d to vs 7d. Eabbitskins.— Bidding for all lots offered at auction on Monday was lively, and every line realised prices quite up to late quotations. Prime winter skins are the lines chiefly wanted, but still medium and other parcels realise proportionately high prices. Best winter we quote from 17dto 16d per fb; medium, 14§d to 12d ; summer, 9d to lid ; suckers and mixed, l£d to 7jd. Hides.— A fair local demand exists at late prices, but notwithstanding that values are exceedingly low shippers refuse to operate. Outside market continues very flat, and there does not appear to be any immediate pioapecfc of values improving. Heavy weight we quote from 3£d to 3|d per lb ; medium aud light, 3d to 2Jd ; inferior, cut and slippy, 2gd to I£d ; green ox, 20s to 17s ; green cow, 15s to Us each. Tallow.— The market continues barely supplied, and for all descriptions a ready 6ale is found. Rough fat is scarce, and commands good prices. We quote prime mutton, 18s to 19s ; medium to good, 16s to 17s ; inferior, 12s to 15s; xough fat (best), 13s to Us; medium to inferior, 10s 6d to Bs. Grain.— Wheat : There is a fair inquiry experienced, and millers are buying prime quality, although their purchases have not been on an extensive scale. A considerable quantity of prime milling has changed hauds within the last week or two, and at present agents do not hold heavy stocks of this class. Medium quality still remains plentiful, although millers have operated slightly in this also. Fowl wheat is in brisk demand, and moves of quickly at a slight advance. We quote prime milling, 3s 2d to 3s 4d; medium , 2s 9d to 3s ; fowl wheat, 2s 3d to 2s 6d per bushel, sacks weighed in. Oats: During the past week business transacted has been at a slight reduction on previous week's values. Shippers are only operating to a limited extent, aud "milleisare buying very little. Prime milling and heavy bright fe d command most attention, and in these lines sales have been chiefly made. Holders are firm in their demands for late values, and this to a considerable exfent has res'ricted business. Theie is very little arriving by rail, and stocks are getting reduced, Medium and inferior feed is more plentiful, and sales are rather more difficult to effect. We quote: Prime milling, Is lid to Is ll£d (a>» extra prime sample would command 2s) ; he&\ y bright feed, Is 10 Jd to Is *fd ; medium, Is 9§d to Is lOd; inferior and damp, Is 8^ to Is 9d. Barley: There is not much doing at present, and late rates are unaltered. Potatoes. — The tone of the market is much weaker, and prices receding, dealers only buying for pressing requirements. At auction on Tuesday 70s was top price, only two or three tons being placed.
