(Peb Pbess Associationo London, August 19. All the Powers except France and Turkey have formally approved of Italy annexing Massowah. The Emperor William, unveiling a statue of Frederick Charles of Germany, said that 18 -army corps and 42,000,000 of people would prefer to die in battle rather than surrender Alsace. The Emp<sror William is now on a visit to Frankfort. In the course of an address he said that the present relations between Ger*many and France gave cause for uneasiness. He denied that his father had ever been favourable to : the surrender of Alsace and Lorraine to France. The attitude of the French press is pacific, and they repudiate any idea of attacking Germany at present. Overtures have been made by the Danish Government for an alliance with Germany, the basis of which should be the cession of the northern portion of the province of Schledwig-llolstein to • Denmark. Prince Bismarck refuses to entertain the proposal. The Porte has instructed the Khedive of Egypt to protest against the annexation of Zulla by Italy. An envoy of the Negus of Abyssinia has had an interview with the Czar of Russia, and has made a formal offer to cede an island in the Red Sea to Russia, provided that the latter Power should agree to send military instructors to Abyssinia. Signor Orispi will proceed to Berlin during this week for the purpose of interviewing Prince Bismarck with reference to the Italian occupation of Massowah. Rome, August 19. Signor Crispi, in replying to M. Goblet, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, states that there is no necessity for Italy to notify to T the Powers the occupation of Massowah. He accuses France, which has no interest in Massowah, of intervening in favour of the Greek residents with the object of bringing about the present difficulty. Kignor Crispi asserts that Italy will defend to the last her interests in the Red Sea, and adds that Massowah has been annexed in the cause of justice and civilisation.
