OUR AUCKLAND SPORTING LETTER.
(From Our Special Sporting Correspondent.)
Auckland, July 31
Somehow the Auckland Racing Club have invariably had bad luck in the working of the totalisator. A year or two back they tried the experiment of working the instrument themselves, but it was not a success, over £1000 being lost during the season through mistakes. They have now a dispute with the totalisator proprietor Adams over the short payment of £1 10s over the last summer meeting. The matter was referred to arbitration last week, but the gentlemen appointed to act in that capacity were unable to agree, and an umpire is now engaged on the question. T9d Kelly's bankruptcy case came before the Supreme Court again yesterday. His lawyer fought strongly against an order being made declaring him a bankrupt, but the judge granted it nevertheless. From what I can learn Kelly's liabilities amount to a good sum, and his coming back to Auckland to meet his creditors is extremely doubtful.
Jimmy Kean will be especially strong in two-year-olds this season, he having no less than six under his charge at Kohimaramia. Corunna, by Musket — Nelly Moore; La Dauphine, by The Dauphine — Brassolis; Nosegay, by Leolinus — Lure filly ; Wister, by Perfume ; Boulanger, by Grand Prix— Fleurette; Leolinus' Atlantic colt, Leoliuus— Lure filly (sister "to Whakawai). Should Curassier, Escutcheon, and Co. be found good enough to take down to the Cauterbury Spring, Lochiel's half brother will probably accompany them, in order to fulfil his engagement in the Welcome Stakes.
Betting on the New Zealand Cup is very limited. Last week inquiries were made as to Escutcheon's price. A hundred to 10 did not lead to business. Sevens to 1 have been accepted about Artillery.
An effort is being made to make the added money to the Auckland Cup GOOsovs instead of 500sov8, as proposed; but from what I can gather, there is little prospect of it being crowned with success.
The total amount of reductions in stakes in the A. R. C. programme is, I believe, over £1000.
FOOTBALL.
Senior Cup matches were continued on Saturday in fine weather. Great interest was evinced in the match between Ponsonby and Graf ton, as on the result depended the holding of the Cup. The latter had the best of the game throughout, and won an easy victory by eight points to nil. Grafton is therefore the winuer of the cup. They having secured five wins, one loss, and one draw out of the seven matches played.
Auckland and Gordon played a most interesting game, and the former won by six points to three, which gave rise to a most enthusiastic scene as hitherto they have been severely dressed down in their matches.
