aiiaineso "Sofflyn. SA€€HARIiXE, FAHLBERG & LIST'S PATEN& KBVOLUTICXN IN SUGAR MAEKET. Ddhjcdin, 10th January 1888. We have pleasure-Mi intimating that Jta hate secured the SOLE AGE&CY for New Zealand, and append some\p««rtioalart about this new product from the F awe and Medical Press : — SACCHARINE. THE NEW SWEETENER. Made from Coal Tar, under Messrs Fahlbbbo and List's Patent, and" which is 300 timei sweeter than Sugar itself. During the past two months, many of tfeo leading Pharmaoists of Britain have given great attention to this article, owing to its value in medicine as a Dietetic Sweetener, it having been proved to have no effect upon diabetic and gouty subjects. Not only is SACCHARINE invaluable in all pharmacy, but also in all domestic uaesjvFruit Preserving, Brewing, Wihe Fortifying, lTo8»ccol T o8»cco Sweetening, Mineral Waters, Syrups, Es^uc^s, &c, and evftry day freeh u/ses are developing. SACCHARINE ii, in addi&m to ii« Sweetening Qualities, a Geod Aptijieptic, antt is unfermentable and uncrystallisable, Hence i€ has advantages possessed by no other products. For inatanoe, in pharmacy in all cases wl^ee sugar is used only as a flavouring agent— »s ia Syrup of Phosphate of Iron, Baßton's Syrup, &c. — in many of whioh the great difSculiy has been to prevent crystallisation. In all disagreeable oompounds, suoh as mixtures containing soda, salicylate, caacara sagrada, quinine, &0., it has great power in covering the objectionable tastes. IN DOMESTIC USES, for all purposes in which sugar is needed as » sweetener, it is invaluable, as it csnnoc posoißly affeot the system, and may be used by everyone, irrespective of age or condition : is inocuousin 80 grain doses daily, having no effect even on the appetite or^digestion. Half to ljgr will s'weeijen. a cup of tea or coffee. It retards fermentation where sufear would promote it. One of the largest confectioners in 1 England is now using it in their lozenge factory. FRUIT PRESERVING. Being an antiseptio, all that is nflaessarv is to put the fruit in a jar or btit&e, using oithor a solution of Sacoharine or a solution of gluooee sweetened with Sacoharine, and the original character of the fruit is not damaged. JAM MAKING. It wttl not be neoessasy to boil in order to make it keep, and no crystallisation will t»ke place, and the fruit instead of beiag all mashed up will be in the origiaal fo»m. The cost will he about the same as using sugar, but no loss will be caused by the scum which always rises under the present system! BREWING. This is imporUofc. A London firm has. jusb settled a moao^ly whioh will cover 40 miiliqh. barrels of beer, the fact of it beUjg radfermentable, it cannot be used for mddng worts, but as a sw.ejp^ener or purifier after we h^eer is brewed. B^er sweetened with Saccharine will not fret, and is not affected fy temperature. WINE FORTIFYING. Wine may be sweetened without fear of fermentation, and a saving at least of 50 per coot, effected, iji the amount of spirit neoeesary to preserve the 'w»e ajefeer the addition of the sweetener, if Saobhanoe is used. Wine tfiTus fortijjed can be imported into England at the lower rate of duty payable on Frenon wines. It is believed that if' Sacoharine is used, the addition of spirit will be osly required to keep the wine bright when diluted, and not as a preservative as at present. SACCWAR-IME being f uUy 300 times sweeter than Cane Sugar it is possible to detect the sweet taste when one part is dissolved in 70,000 parts of distilled water — i.e., one grain per gallon. It is sparingly soluble in cold wa.ter, more so in warm, thoroughly so in spirits and in water containing bicarbonate soda; and to meet the difficulty of insolubility in water, a soluble salt is being made to make it perfectly soluble in water. Consumers can either have the pure Saccharine or the Saccharine which contains 9092 per cent, of the pure. Our first supply of Saccharine is just to hand, and we are also now, prepared to take indents from consumers. Although we have secured the absolute right of handling all importations of Saccharine to the colony, we have determined to make tfce terms satisfactory to buyers.
