The Paulsen-Morphy End Game.

The mate in four moves in the Paulsen-Morphy game, published receutly, is effected as follows :— White. Mr I. G. Boulaye, of the At-honrcum Club, points out, tha f . if Morphy did not want to mate in four he could have done so in five by 23.. .8 to B 6 eh, followpd by 21 .. 11 tn Xt 7, &c. Mr J Lord, formerly a l*>ading*Manclicster player, Bonds an analysis showing that Morphy could have mated in four after White's 22nd move by bringing the R to Xt 7 ab one. Another correspondent who writes to us on the subject is the editor of the British Chess Magazine, and acting on a hint given by him, we searched the files of our American exchanges, and in the St. Louis GlobeDemocrat for the end of February of the present year (1886) we found a communication from Zukertort demonstrating that Morphy had a mate in six, commencing af'er White's 20th move, when the position stood thus : -
