Mining at the Teviot.
(Feom Ooh Own Correspondent.)
Roxburgh, July 2. It seems pretty certain that Welman's dredge has been made fit to tackle the difficulties of the Clutha. I hear, in fsct, that the improved dredge was to start to work at Manuherikia today. It is, I hear, a great improvement on the original design, and it is not'unlikely that one or two will be put on the river near Roxburgh. If so, things ought to begin to look a little more lively. The regular dredges, I believe, have been doing very well lately. The river claims seem much as usual, none doing extraordinary business except the prosperous one of Carlaw and party. I did hear that this party were making for a while £90 a man weekly,
The United Hercules has fallen through, but seems likely to be revived on a diiferent footing, the floaters being satisfied to be paid out of the gold earned instead of in advance. If they make the calls more reasonable also, tho thing may go ahead.
I do not know of anything of much importance from the Waikaia claims. Messrs Lodge and Co., of the Ri6e and Shine, were nearly through with their tunnel, expecting to finish in jibout six weeks, but unfortunately a fresh face I has fallen in, and they will be delayed for a long , time to come
