LAND.

Th« demand for good farms continues, and several sales at satisfactory prices have been reported during the month. Of one of these sales close to Christcburch the auctioneer writes : — " On Monday last we conducted a clearing sale for a worthy veteran colonist — one who has viewed from his position the many vicissitudes of the art of making a nation— one who has seen the demolition of the Captain Cook wild pig, the reclamation of swamps into flower gardens, the nigger heads of the past become manure to foster tha promotion of English gross and fodder for cattle and stock, for which this abundant and fruitful land is so eminent. The attendance at our client's sale on Monday would have made the most dense brain vibrate — the past and present were there in full refulgence. Old identities were in full force, and many stories of the past related and 25 years of colonisation rubbed shoulders with one another. The sale was a success, and Mr John Smith was traasKigrated lo

the land of hops, cherries, and orotty girls at the age of 70 years, with the best wishes of his many friends." It is satisfactory to knurr that some of onr old colonists have done well, even after making allowance for the " refulgence " of the report. "Pretty girls at the age of 70" is good, but I fancy the " intelligent compositor " helped to make them keep so well.
