DAIRY FACTORIES.
Though the meetings in town and tbe proposal to establish a central factory did not excite much enthusiasm, the idea of establishing district factories was taken op locally with some spirit. Up to now there appears every prospect of factories being started at Rangiora, Sef ton, Tai Tapni and two or three other dairying localities. The result can scarcely be do good as if one substantial factory were worked ; but Mie production of each will be large enough to make itself known, and that will be much to be thankful for. Mr W. Harding, manager of the Flemington (near Ashburton) Dairy Factory, has been lecturing on the subject, and considers that cheese is more profitable than butter to the makers. The Flemington faotory turned out 40 tons of cheese last season, of which 13 tons were sold on the spot, and the remainder shipped Homo. Advices of sale of early shipments aro anxiously awaited. The Geraldine factory has also ceased work for the season, having made 20 tons of cheese. Anything over 5d per lb in London will give milk suppliers a good return per cow. Mr Harding states that the fanners supplying the Flemington factory receive for milk at the rate of £7 to £7 10s a year for each cow, and that the land there — good reclaimed swamp — will carry a cow to two acres.
