CASUALTIES,
At Masterton on the 20th inst. a station hand named Chaffery, engaged on the Rev. Mr Aadrews' station, met his death while attempting to ford the Wherama river. The body has not yet been recovered. Constable Oollarton, stationed at Taurua, had several of bis ribs broken by being thrown from bis horse, whic ot into a quicksand.
A somewhat serious accident happened on Saturday afternoon to Mr William Thompson, who is, well kuown as the lato licensee of the Criterion Hotel. He was engaged in doing something to the embankment at the rear of Farley's Hall, and fell from a plank, a distance of some 25ft or 30ft, on to a brick footpath below, striking a stout wooden fence in his passage to the ground. On being picked up it was discovered that ho had sustained a severe blow on the crown of the- head [ one of his arms had been hurt, and he was suffering from pain internally. He was conveyed to' his residence and attended by Dr Wanless, who found that he was suffering from concussion of the brain and severe internal injuries.' " .' •
A man named Joseph Walton died very suddenly at Blenheim on Friday night. He attended the Resident Magistrate's Court as a witness for his brother Jacob, who was defendant in a suit for damages to a horse and trap, and gave evidence. While driving to his home at Onamatutu he became ill, and was taken back to town and a dopfcor sent for, but death occurred just as the doctor came in. The cause was heart disease.
Elizabeth Beston, who was severely injured by burning at a shirb factory on the Great North road, Auckland, and was sent to the hospital, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning. Deceased was warming some glue at the fire when her dress caught, and before the flames could be extinguished she was terribly burned about the back and legs.
The foody of a man was found in the»Mataura river on Monday. It is supposed to be that of a man named Jamieson', who disappeared from above Gore after committing an assault on April 3, and whose coat was afterwards found in a hedge. The body was -fully dressed,- except a
coat. t ' '' A man named Alexander Mitchell, who was engaged in loading a waggon with grain at. Messrs Donald Reid, and Co.V; store. in Craw* ford street on Tuesday morning, had his right leg fractured by a .sack of bats coming down on top cf him from the 'shoot and knocking him down.
