ANIMAL AILMENTS.

(Abridged from Agricultural Exchanges.) CATTLE. COW NOT CLEANING. Subscriber.— One of my dairy cows has slipped calf (dead), about seven and a-half months carried. She has not cleansed, now 10 days. What do you recommend me to give her for the purpose ? She has not been allowed out, and gets two bran mashes daily. Answer : The contents of the womb should be removed by a competent veterinary practitioner. If such cannot be done, allow oilcake, boiled turnips, and crushed oats twice daily, with the following medicine in each feed for one week:— Sulphate of iron, ldr ; cantharides, sgr. Have one dozen powders made by a chemist, and use as directed, unless veterinary aid cau be obtained. HEIFEB SUFFEBING FKOM ATTACKS OF DIZZINESS. W. B. — A three-year-old heifer gets quite stupid occasionally ; holds her head high and to one side ; stumbles into the ditch and falls down, but in half an hour is up apparently all right again. I believe it is all in her head. I bled her ; put seton in dewlap ; blistered back ef head and gave dose Epsom salts and chlor. potassium. She is to calve in May ; in fair condition, but not fat. Please advise treatment. Answer: Your animal is affected with a disease of the brain~yiz., a hydatid or encephaloid tumour, and if the animal is in fair condition you should dispose of her to tbe butcher. ■ IN-CALF COW AILING. T. W. o.— l have a cow; her time to calve would be 26th April ; for the last two or three weeks she looks rather dull, and when not feeding or chewing will occasionally give a moan as if suffering from some pain. She is feeding well, bowels regular, and has a fair share of milk. I think, if she is in calf, that it must be dead, for she has not the bulk she should have if all was right ; she.is coming four years oM ; second calf. Answer : Administer, at once, lib Epsom salts, ldr calomel, loz ginger, and lib treacle, with a little warm water. Feed on bran mashes, and liuseed tea as drink, with a small quantity of good hay, and, if necessary, repeat the draught after three days. HEIFER AILING. T. S. — I have a two-year-old heifer four weeks off note ; has been ill four days. She has been examined by a veterinary surgeon, who,, thinks heart disease is the cause. Once every six or eight hours she commences to moan, and her sides are in quick motion, with an occasional cough. This continues for an hour each time, after which she is apparently well, and eats a little ; bowels regular. Please saY what should be done. Answer : Administer, at once, lib Epsom salts, ldr calomel, loz gentian in a quart of thick flaxseed gruel. .Allow plenty of linseed gruel, and, should the case not progress satisfactorily, repeat the dose after 48 hours. COW WITH APOPLEXY— SCURF ON UDnER. Roland. — An Ayrshire cow, three and a-half years old, calved (second calf) more than a fortnight ago. She seemed doing nicely for 10 days, and the uddi r showed good signs of milk, though the actual result was scarcely equal to the appearance. Four daya ago she was found lying in the field, stretched out, and being got up she staggered round in a circle, lier on head turned in, her eyes very wild, and a great trembling all over. We got her into the house, and administered lib Epsom salts, §02 ginger, §oz nitre, in a pint of linseed oil. She had another tit, not so bad, in about three hours, so I kept her in the house all night, but turned her out to bare pasture next day, and have kept her there, as she seems well since. Her udder is covered underneath with a very thick scurf, scarcely sores, but very nearly. lam bathing it with warm water, and applying hog's lard. J?lease say what was the matter, and what treatment Bhould have been given, also if I can do more for the udder. Answer : The cow had a slight attack of parturient apoplexy, and your .treatment was quite right. Have her milked three times a day, and apply a little vaseline to the affected parts of the udder once a day.

HOUSEWIVES BEWAKE. Be wary of highly-coloured and drugged preparations offered as pure Cocoa. Anything of a medicated character associated with Cocoa proclaims it at once to be an imposture. Ask for 14 CadburyV' and see you get it.
