THE RING.
A match for £100 a-side, to fight to a finish, has been arranged between Laing and Slavin; to be fought at Wanganui on April 25 next. A petition against glove fights, signed by 463 women, has been presented to the Wanganui borough council. The council decided, in licensing public buildings, to prohibit; such exhibitions. During a boxing tournament in Newcas le, New South Wales, a most disgraceful scene ensued during the contest between Payne an Marshall, a coloar^J man. In the secon round Paynj had ib nearly all his own way, and before time was called he had Marshall at his mercy. Marshall spun round in a groggy condition, receiving terrific blows as he made for his chaif and tried to pull off his gloves ; and while Marshall was against the ropes Payne kept dealing heavy blows. At this juncture " Mace, the Dummy," rushed from the wings and dealt Payne a terrible blow under the left ear, felling him as though he had been poleaxed. Payne fell prone on hia face, and made an attempt to rise, but was only able to stagger and crawl off. The stage was immediately rushed by the audience, Subiuspeotor Lynch and Senior-constable Butler being the first to arrive from the auditorium. The whole thing was a most revolting affair. Payne was taken home by his friends. A summons has been served on Mace for assault within view of the police.
