LITE MINING.
The Whites Reef Gold Mining Company's mmc manager reports for week ending March 10, 1888 .-—Since my last report a rise has been put up at end of main tunnel, which is 54ft ahead of new shatt. This rise is now a height of 46ft ; after rising 20ft the lode widened out to 4ft. I have opened out east and west of this rise. One drive is now in 12ft, and the lode is fully 4ft thick in face of drive. It was my intention to put this rise up a fortnight ago, but owing to some of the sets in main tunnel breaking, it had to be repaired. I was delayed considerably or would have had out a large quantity of this stone before washing up. Splendid prospects can be obtained from this lode. There has been two men working on western end of No. 1 rise; the lode in stope is lft thick, but there is an indication of it widening oat. The plates were scraped on Saturday and yielded 40oz of amalgam from 35 tons of stone.
Our Waimate correspondent writes that the hailstorm in the Waitaki North district on Monday last did considerable damage. The duration of the storm was not long, bub the hailstones were large. Orchard trees were stripped, and where windows were exposed to the storm they were beaten in. The storm passed off to seaward, missing Waimate and the northern districts.
The Tapanui Courier hopes to see an immediate inquiry into the reasons of the changes made in the Sheep and Rabbit department in Otago by which Mr M'Douald and Mr Hickson are superseded.
