The Chairman intimated that the result of the polling for three members to serve on the board was as follows :— Dr Brown, 124 ; Mr Fraer, 105 ; Mr J. Macgregor, 70 ; Miss Freeman, 57 ; Mr K. Ramsay, 48 ; Mr G. Sumpter, 37 ; Mr J Wood, 28. The three members elected were therefore himself, Mr Fraer, and Mr Macgregor.

TOKOMAIHIRO DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

Correspondence in connection with the appointment of Miss Richards as fourth assistant at the above school was read.— The Rector (Mr Reid) wrote to the committee stating that it was unfair to the school and to the other applicants, though four members had voted for Miss Richards to three against her. Miss Richards had no certificate to teach singing, while Miss Ferguson had ; Miss Richards had only a license to teach, while Miss Ferguson had full E and partial D. — The three members of the committee—Messrs Moore (chairman), Campbell, aud Murray— who were in a minority, wrote to the board expressing their sympathy and agreement with the rector's opinions, and offering their assistance to the board in any action the latter might take in the matter. In answer to a question, the Chairman said that Miss Richards had attained a partial E.

After a division as to the legality of confirming the appointment of Miss Richards, Mr Fraser moved and Mr Dick seconded—" That the teacher selected by the committee be appointed." Mr Fulton moved and Mr Fraeb seconded, as an amendment— " That, inasmuch as Miss Richards' name was forwarded to the committee under a misapprehension as to her qualifications, the vaeanpy be readvertiesed." The amendment was put and lost by 5 votes to 2, the voting being as follows :— Noes : Messrs Fraer, Fraser, Green, Hislop, and Dick. Ayes : Messrs Fulton and Clark.

The motion was then put and carried by 4 to 3, as follows:— Ayes: Messrs Fraer, Fraser, Hislop, and Dick. Noes : Messrs Fulton, Green, and Clark.

The Chairman, in declaring the motion carried, s.iid that he could have upset it by exerc-sing his deliberative and casting votes, but he cl"d nob care about doing that. On the motion of Dr Hislop it was resolved— "That the chairman, Mr Fulton, and the mover be appointed a committee to consider and report as to the lowest grade of certificate advisable to be fixed as rendering a candidate eligible for appointment to each position in the several schools."
