THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE. (From Our London Correspondent.)
London, January 13. The follcwing information will be of interest to (hose connected witli the frozen meat trade. The Importations of Australasian frozen meats in London and their condition on arrival since the commencement of the busineEs are as follows :— Australia.
From the foregoing ngiur-s it will be seen that while, as compared with 1886. the imports of mutton and lamb in 1887 from Australia increased by 21.851 carcasses, or nearly "'■) per cent. , those from New Zealand were augmented by 110,529 carcasses, or nearly 17 per cent. Of the to^al number of carcasses of mntto-» landed from the Australasian colonies a proportion equal to 55 per cent, (as against 58 per cent, in 1886) came to hand during the latter half of the year, the demand being then less active than in the earlier half. It is satisfactory to note that though several parcels of New Ze .land sheep were, on arrival, found to be slightly injured from various causes, not a single shipment from that colony was sufficiently affected to warrant its being described as damaged or unsatisfactory. The following table gives the importations of fro/.en and fresh mutton into London from various sources during the past four years, the weight being taken from returns specially prepared under the authority of the Board of Trade :—
