FRANCE AND ITALY. (Per Press association.)
London, March 1.
Signor Crispi, the Italian Premier, insists upon a large increase being made on the import duties on French produces introduced into Italy. The Chamber of Deputies strongly favour the action of the Premier.
Paris, March 1.
The Italian and French tariffs have been raised from 20 to 50 per cent. In referring to the fact in the Chamber of Deputies, M. Flourens said the convention was solely for the purpose of regulating police arrangements, and did not affect the international situation.
Rome, March 5.
Signor Grispi, the Italian Premier, has demanded that 15 French infantry soldiers shall be punished for compelling a number of Italian railway officials on the frontier to kneel to them at the point of the bayonet.
Signor Crispi, the Premier, declares that the Modane incident is not of a serious nature.
The tariff war between France and Italy is being conducted in a most bitter manner, and a very belligerent disposition is being manifested by both sides in the negotiations.
