Professor Blackie, who himself is a warm sympathiser with the crofters' agitation, says fchat Mrs Gordon Baillie is so clever that she woald deceive the Devil himself. She has ibeeji /ivingfor some years in great style, and 3ms &iu acted considerable attention as si woman of large means. She has now disappeared ,v,ery suddenly, and has left a large (number of debts unpaid. The detectives are ■searching for her with a warrant for her .arrest on a charge of fraud. Mrs Gordon ißaillie's mother earns faer living as a charwoman.
