ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the association was held in the Volunteer Hall on Friday evening. Capt. Sommerville presided, and there were more than 200 volunteers present. The followiug is tho council elected fov the ensuing year: — Lieutenant Ross, Napier ; Captain Sommerviile, Wanganui ; Colonel Mahon, Auckland ; Captain Griffiths,Blenheira; Mr Meddiugs, Christchurch ; Lieutenant Findlay, Temuka; Major Acheson, luvercargill ; Lieutenant Lucas, Thames ; Captain Rowland, Nelson ; Major Burns, Dunedin; Captain Cossgrove, Oamaru; Captain Kohn, Wellington. The meeting then considered the advisability of using anew weapon. Captain Sommerville advocated the adoption of the Martini-Henri. If they decided to get those weapons, he would take it upon himself to have them here in a few months. He said if tho Martini-Hfinri was decided upon the Government would import say 100,000 or 200,000 rounds of ammunition, and sell it at about 10s per 100. Gunner Driver moved — " That the council be authorised to get 400 Martini-Henry rifles for use at the next; meeting of the association." Captain Milne moved an amendment — " That the arm with which the volunteers of tho colony are armed boused. " The motion was carried, only 12 voting against it. Captain Collins was appointed hon. secretary and treasurer. On the motion of Mr W. Ballinger, it was resolved that the regulation cap be procured ; a pattern to be decided by the council. On the motion of Captain Griffiths it was resolved to leave the matter of fixing the date of next meeting to the council, they to take into consideration the advisability of choosing a central position. On the suggestion of Lieutenant Moore it was resolved that the standing and kneeling match bo struck out of the belt matches? or be shot for at such times as the council think suitable. Captain Collins, who has performed the duties of hon. secretary for the last; five years, was granted an honorarium of £25, the vote being carried with cheers, Captain Sommerville was granted an honorarium of 40gs. Captain Sommerville intimated that next meeting would be held at Marlborough. Votes of thanks were passed to Colonel Mahon and the officers of the staff for the efficient and able way in which they had carried out their duties, and to the retiring members of the council. The meeting was closed with cheers fop Captain Sommerville.

The eighth annual exhibition of the Canterbury Art Sooiety was opened last week. The pictures shown number 245, against 270 last year, but the general quality is decidedly superior. Sixty-one pictures were rejected.
