CHRISTCHURCH.
Selwyn.— The fish are not taking freely. Several Christchurch anglers have been trying their luck, but with small results. Tho following takes have been made during the week by local anglers:— Mr Walter Tipler, seven fbb, largest 71b ; Mr O'Callaghan, eight fish on Monday aud four on Wednesday, the largest 81b ; Mr Woodman, one of 51b ; Mr H. Overton, three fish, averaging 31b.
' AsnnußroN.— l am informed the Ashburton is affording very fair sport this season. Tut following take by Mr Shury was made one evening last week:— One each sslb, 3^lb, 3A1I), ami IMb. I have not been able to ascertain "the bait used.
The Lake Ellesmere fishermen are strenuously resisting the proposal to close the lake against net fishing. On Friday some of them interviewed the Hon. E. C. J. Stevens, and requested him to lay their wishes before tho Government, and stated that the lake fisheries gave employment to 250 men with 20 boats. Mr Stevens promised to communicate with theGovernment, and recommended them to get up a petition on the subject.
